Liked it alot. Artsy. Kept my interest over the others from start to finish (no pun intended). So far you have my vote.

Going to be hard to follow if you guys win. Not a lot of people have nice fast cars. lol. and it didn't follow the story all that much =/ Still, it was enjoyable and I liked it...hey, is your car for sale? =D Good luck guys

3/30/2009 at 1:16 p.m. by jdemeere

Thanks! Well I don't own any of those cars really. You could just be creative and figure out a way. Or there is nothing that says a race would even have to take place. Something could always happen to prevent it. That is why I like this site cause you never know what you are going to get.

Nice job! Those were some pretty hot cars! >:3

I agree that this is a tough act to follow, though certainly not impossible. Having those vehicles steps the believability and production values of this entry up a lot. The crazy glowing bag, does, too, although it feels a teeny bit out of place for something that feels like it should have Vin Diesel in it.

Decently solid acting and some cool camera work (especially the moving shot in the garage as the car enters). The story direction detaches me a little, but I also enjoy the drastic change of pace from the simple bounty hunter concept.

Nice work over all! I'm very torn about who I want to win, because while this may not be the most technically superior, it really opens doors to a new type of Rootclip story, and that alone entices me. Good luck!

This is definitely the best so far. Great professional quality. If this slot goes to one of those other videos, It will totally discredit this site. All the other videos look like something a high-school student who was bored slapped together in a couple hours. This is the first one that actually would make this thing fun. It is great quality editing and acting, the audio is great, and gives the next person a challenge. YEAH, it's not meant to be easy. You don't have to make the next clip about a race, you won't need fancy cars, etc. Just creativity. It's nice to see someone take a different approach than "oh let's just kill of the boss." GOOD JOB- I know you'll win. Let's just hope the real judges are smart and can recognize the difference between real talent and a bunch of pellissippi dropouts..

I love it!! Keep up the great work. Nice to see someone take a different approach. I agree with the last person. Everyone else's videos look amateur and all the same type of plot. It's supposed to be difficult for the next person and give them a challenge!

Not bad. Some shots were a bit hard to see (inside car) and not quite sure how the 'old film' effect plays in, takes away from a professional appearance. The story is interesting, though maybe a product of having access to some cool cars? The cliff hanger didn't leave a ton of suspense, but works. Overall a good first entry, keep at it!

I have to say, although all the other submissions are sweet, this one was my favorite. for once someone has had a different idea and taken the story in a different direction i had not anticipated. nice work good luck.

@FungusRidden thanks for the comment! I am new here but I have seen every video on this site and I do see that people like the use of guns here. I thought I would do something a little different then. You are right, the act could potentially be hard to follow however it is not impossible and could go in any direction.

@8512S thanks for the comment however this is NOT some professional video. I work as a network support engineer by day and a filmmaker by night so to speak. This is just a playground and a great way to show your stuff to people with similar interests. This site is great and I would like to see it only get better. However it won't get better with negativity so try to bring some positive light and you may be surprised at what can happen.

@katy19 Thanks. I think this is a site for amateur and professionals to have fun in. I agree I do like a challenge though.

@BohemianFilmCommune thanks for the comment! Yes I was urged to get rid of the INT CAR shot that was so dark however I had nothing else to work with so I made the decision to keep it in. I needed to keep Ben in the story afterall because I cut out everything else. I'll do better next time when I have more time to plan it out. I shot it in 3 hours on Friday then edited it on Saturday and turned it in that night. Next time I'll plan my shots better and not settle for anything like that. Thanks for the tips!

@WAKEupJAKEup I like your name... thanks for the comments. I actually have some prop guns but I made a point to NOT use them because I notice that is a common thing. Its easier to just kill somebody on screen and it looks cool getting the action shots in but I wanted to try and work in something different. Thanks for noticing!

@BohemianFilmCommune oh and about the old film look. I must confess... I just watched Grindhouse before doing this and wanted to play around with that. So it's basically me just playing. It doesn't look as nice after it has been encoded again and put on the site so it is a trial and error thing. However I do like the look of old films so I just might try it again until I am satisfied. ;)

ah yeah, its more the contrast of new cars/clothes/setting to old film stock look, you know? But Grindhouse, good digs for sure

I understand wanting to play around with the "old film" look but it DISTRACTS so much from your work. I forced my attention away from what was happening and kept me asking, why? Good work with the car montage, it flowed nicely. The acting in this was great, Disco was spot on! His character kept me interested. You seem pretty enthusiastic about submitting, I challenge you to make every camera movement and angle have a meaning behind it. I think you can do it.

3/31/2009 at 9:43 p.m. by jdemeere

@jaytaylorthe1 Hey thanks for the comments. Yes trust me... after I had submitted it I said to my Lady... "You know... I should have left it clean and just did color correction instead... oh well... too late now." Disco had never done that before but I kept telling him he was doing great. I told him that at first you will feel all weird but you will get used to it. Eventually I only had to do 1 or 2 takes with him. As far as the challenge... I'll take that challenge because I know I can too. ;) Next time I will have a little more time to plan. When people are waiting to go out to the bar and waiting on you to do your video you tend to just try and get as much as you can, as fast as you can when they have such short notice. ;)

My hypothesis about the old film effect, actually, was that you had a weak camera and were attempting to mask its deficiencies with additional post-prod degrading. That's what I'd do. :P

I think Jaytaylor's challenge is actually a difficult one (to take seriously, anyway; you can always BS something satisfactory afterwards). For me, the process is a lot like making a comic book: I pick shots based on what will simply create the best look, although film certainly adds another dimension with its use of motion. It'd definitely be interesting to see how you can apply your visual composition to match the mood taking place in the narrative. :)

Also, I think I'd rather pick up Chapter 3 from this entry, but I'm spooked by the difficulty of organizing all the elements. :/ It's definitely good to be competitive and challenge the other submitters, but it's also a strategy game that requires a certain degree of crowd-pleasing and teamwork. It's very possible that voters planning to submit may avoid supporting your entry simply based on their own playing of the same game and wanting to give themselves added benefit. Oddly, this site is half about making good entries, and half about playing your cards at the right time against the right people.

Being good at marketing and psychology may be more important here than being good at writing or directing. ;)

@FungusRidden Oh yes... the old film look can mask the weak camera equipment however only sublte changes are needed like color, changing it to 23.976 and maybe even soften up the edges a bit. This time I just pretty much applied everything and got the quality down to an old VHS which I was really trying to see just how far I could get it. The actual raw video looked pretty descent considering what I had to work with but I just hate the hard video look so I always tweak it with color and whatever else I can to get a different feel. Jaytaylor's challenge I do take seriously because I do take my ambition to Direct and make movies seriously. I like challenges and things that seem impossible. I always think... if it's impossible I can do it. That being said the only cards I do play is poker. I have a different approach to this... I don't hold back in sake of others because it would show on screen and I would only be letting myself down. If I have a vision, no matter how crazy or impossible, I try to get it in camera because it's not just about what the audience will like... it's about self expression. It is an art form after all and I know it isn't going to be liked by everybody but the drive is still there even if it isn't a winner. I think if people let themselves go and didn't worry about the prizes or what the judges will think then it would be full of self expression instead of self doubt. Least that is how I view it, to each their own. Thanks for the feedback!
