This fits nicely with the previous chapters!

5/22/2008 at 3:54 p.m. by killerrobotninja

asdasd... that sure is a creative username. did you punch your keyboard twice?

5/22/2008 at 4:08 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

killerrobotninja... that sure is a creative comment. did you forget that this isn't a social comment board, but rather a place to comment on the movie?

Instead of trolling people who like this movie, maybe you could post something constructive.

5/22/2008 at 4:23 p.m. by killerrobotninja

haha.... wow, i didn't realize it wasn't a social comment board. I thought that's exactly what it was. But, i digress, sorry if I offended anyone.

I do like a few parts of this one. That rotoscoping was interesting at the beginning.

YOU'RE F*ING GAY FOR ADVERTISING BUT I SUPPORT THIS

5/22/2008 at 10:31 p.m. by FungusRidden

Thanks for your comments, everyone! We appreciate all the encouragement, but we also value your suggestions for improving our work -- as with anything, this is a great learning experience, too, and the audience comes first! ;)

The Hellfire was, obviously, an afterthought. Had we planned for a shot like that, it certainly would've been done properly with a screen. But then, it has a certain comedic charm to it this way, too, I think. :3

This is awesome!! :)

5/23/2008 at 10:21 a.m. by root

one time, i snuck out of bed and went downstairs and ate the cookies that my mom was saving for someone who deserved them. I was up until 4 in the morning. I must have gotten my cookie count up to like 90.

When Mom woke up, and came downstairs, there I was with chocolate all over my face. But I just stood there looking innocent, besides the brown smears on my mouth. Everyone knew I did it, but I denied it.

Long story short my mom disqualified my video and called me a cheater.

5/23/2008 at 10:24 a.m. by fiercedeityys

i love how everyone gets so accusatory (word? i dunno) on this site when the video they don't like is winning. you ever think that maybe, just maybe, the people who made this video just have more friends or a better way or letting their friends know that they need votes? killerrobotninja commented on his own video saying all his votes were friends and family. i just think it is interesting how everyone is so quick to judge on this site when things don't go their way.

5/23/2008 at 10:33 a.m. by root

KRN's trends make more sense. His votes didn't double overnight (while people sleep). I just want FungusRidden to know that nobody's fooled.

5/23/2008 at 10:38 a.m. by fiercedeityys

well, i don't know about you, but i was up until about 4 in the morning last night (eastern time) and i didn't see it "double" like you say. the way i saw it, was that it hit about 50-60 by maybe like, 4 or 5 pm (again, eastern time) and then gradually made is way up throughout the rest of the night, getting a vote or two here or there. when i went to bed it was at 91, so i'm not finding it hard to believe that it got a few more votes in those 6 hours i slept.

5/23/2008 at 11:13 a.m. by charliechaplin

There comes a time when people should just own up to it. We all know it's going on, now while some people are complaining about, there is nothing they can really do. They're just frustrated they couldn't get as many friends to help them out.

But hey power to you! It's not like you video was bad or anything.

5/23/2008 at 11:16 a.m. by dangerousdave

and not everyone are asleep while you are asleep. like me for example :)

5/23/2008 at 11:16 a.m. by Cadillac

I do like the way this one went other than the comedic aspect. I think its a bit more of a serious theme and to throw the comedy in there, though it shows your personality, isnt quite the perfect touch. I do like how the one guy appears to really be able to take a hit though.

5/23/2008 at 11:19 a.m. by fiercedeityys

i can agree with what charliechaplin says. like, i've just gone with the flow and assumed that they spread the word hardcore and got all of their friends and family to help vote, which is what KRN did (got friends and family). the problem is see is that people are accusing them of cheating, which i'd assume is something beyond just getting the help of friends, etc. and i don't think it is fair to accuse them of that. i would just say that they have more friends and family, and can get the word out better to them. not everyone's friends are in the same state/country/time zone.

5/23/2008 at 11:30 a.m. by charliechaplin

Yes, cheating is a little harsh. If that was the case then they're would have to have been an abundance of created e-mails, making some web host happy.

We just need them to reveal their promotion secret! haha

5/23/2008 at 11:38 a.m. by dangerousdave

cough browser games friends cough

5/23/2008 at 3:05 p.m. by cloudedsky

It's not cheating in the sense that rules are being broken.

It just seems off to some people because this is not one of the best submitted videos.

However, there doesn't seem to be anything about having to be good in the requirements, just "Gain the most "thumbs up" votes during the voting period and your video becomes the next chapter in the story."

Sadface.

5/23/2008 at 3:55 p.m. by fiercedeityys

oh, i'm sorry, i didn't realize that there was a unanimous decision on which video was the best submitted. last i knew, it was a matter of opinion, and in my opinion, this is the one i enjoyed/liked the best.

5/23/2008 at 4:25 p.m. by gwilhelm56

it's ALL in the Promotion ... promotion in the real world means more $$$$$$$$$$ and that's what it's all about..

5/23/2008 at 4:30 p.m. by root

fiercedeity... yes, the word best is subjective. Let's put it this way, if we put all 8 videos in front of a jury of piers and asked them to decide which was "best". It would be between a select few, do you honestly believe this one would be chosen as the best?

5/23/2008 at 4:34 p.m. by root

and before you give the wrong answer, it's no.

Where's the real critics out there? share your top 3 in order. Mine?

  1. Underworld
  2. Trunked
  3. Teleport Serum
5/23/2008 at 4:39 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

root, I've been watching the accusations you've been making, and quite honestly, I'm shocked that you've taken this as some sort of crusade against this movie

like fiercediety said, this is all subjective

just because your horse in the race isn't winning, doesn't mean you should harass the one in the lead until you get what you want

5/23/2008 at 4:44 p.m. by fiercedeityys

Well, I can easily say that Underworld wouldn't be in my top 3 at all, and that's not even against the film or the people who directed it. Frankly, I think it looks and sounds great, but the direction it took is not one I agreed with. If perhaps KRN had directed something that I felt was closer to where I believed the story should go from Ch.2, then maybe he would have gotten my vote, but frankly, his story direction was not something I enjoyed. Along with that, the Joe character was not funny to me, he was downright annoying. To me, the top 3 videos would be:

1: The Wrong Guy 2: Trunked 3: Tie between Teleport Serum and Trespassing

5/23/2008 at 5:38 p.m. by Cadillac

Well, My top 3 would be, in no particular order so as to not hurt anybodies feelings, Looking Glass, The Wrong Guy, and Trunked. Here's why.

Trunked: I like the way it was shot, and I like the direction it took. Loved how they put him in the trunk. The Wrong Guy: Again, really liked the direction it took as far as the roles turning. Not so keen on the comedic aspect of it, but still really enjoyed it. Looking Glass: Thought that it was very...Palahniukish?...Just way out there but still very well done, and LOVED the mirror over.

As far as my 3 least favorite, Zombies, Circus Horrors, and Underworld. Here's Why:

Zombies: I just dont think it followed the story at all. Circus Horrors: Didnt like the Time Lapse or the whole drug useage, ruins the movie. Underworld: though I thought as far as the shooting went, it was probably done better than most, it still just didnt follow the story. He sees the door shutting at the end of chapter two. Notice this was the only one that he wasnt still in pursuit?

as far as the other two:

Teleporting serum: the actors themselves seemed bored with it. though I did like the whole teleportation theme. Trespassing: Though I like a lot of the shots, I liked the video up until the point where it was a telephone in the briefcase.

5/23/2008 at 6:42 p.m. by FungusRidden

Whoa -- hey, I'm glad we've got discussion beyond dirty anal references now, but I'm a little disappointed that the discussion has veered into personal attacks on credibility and who's (apparently) cheating. :<

I'm not going to promote our entry visually over the rest, because I made it clear on KRN's board that HIS was hands-down production value savvy (more, I think, than the rest). The trick, though, is combining that with story elements, and those appear to be the only negative feedback his short's received. And, obviously, the third side of the coin is promotion/advertising -- just like real life, the academy awards rarely go to the box office champs.

I would like to point out something that would be impossible to recognize for anyone else here. Our submission was sent four times; once it had no audio, once it had no video, and once it didn't send at all. Ultimately, we had to crap up the file (to the point of it looking the way it does now, pixelated and full of noise) to successfully get it in. It wouldn't have been Underworld by a Long Shot (film humor. Get it?), but it also might not have upset so many people's aesthetic opinions the way it seems to now.

Finally, these questions of honesty seem a little wild and maybe even misplaced -- wouldn't anyone so knowledgeable in the various ways of cheating be MOST likely to be doing it themselves? Please, if you have serious evidence for your accusations, bypass us and take it straight to the top of the food chain. But a better use of your time would be to promote your own material, because spending that time scrutinizing our video will not yield anything dubious or illegal.

If we stuck by the rules to make the video, then we'll stick to the rules when we promote it, too. Thank you for your concerns, however. :>

5/23/2008 at 8:35 p.m. by MarieKateri

I like this clip. It moves into the next segment without craming too much infomration in, and I feel that it gives a good set up for what could happen next. I can also appreciate the creation of the shots, they had some movement to them instead of the camera just sitting there. I didn't quite get the red behind the guy with the glasses though. But I would be excited to do a follow up chapter to this clip, it seems open to many possibilities.

5/23/2008 at 9:06 p.m. by killerrobotninja

You know what? Good Luck Guys.

My son just took his first steps tonight, and I got a little sentimental. Being a bitter jerk about a contest is not a very good example. So forgive me if I came off in a bad light (film humor. Get it?). We just worked really hard and, like eveyone else i suppose, feel like we deserve to win.

Watch out though, zombies at 6 o' clock!

5/23/2008 at 9:57 p.m. by FungusRidden

KRN, we have no (see: zero) hard feelings, and with any luck (which sounds silly), we still won't after Team Zombie has eaten us alive and claimed another victory. That's simply how the cookie crumbles.

If any of us were really here to win more than to do what we love -- filmmaking -- we wouldn't have spent that extra time (as I recall you did on the screen shot) trying to make our entries interesting and creative. We would do exactly as was suggested earlier (forgive me for forgetting who) : post a black still image, then amass gang voting.

Not to say that we certainly aren't trying to achieve the massive gang voting anyway, but making something to enjoy and be proud of is clearly the first and foremost goal of every filmmaker on this website (for now).

I only hope that no matter what, all of us continue to really give viewers a good show every round, whether there's a simpler way to the goal or not.

Best of luck to you and your talented team, also. :3

5/23/2008 at 10:35 p.m. by abztractman

Wow. That's about all I got right now.

I'm glad the tone of this commenting is starting to change, because frankly, I was getting a bit disheartened by how bitter and vindictive people seemed to be getting. Sure, everyone who entered a clip put a lot of thought, effort, sleeplessness, sweat and heart into their movies. I'm sure everyone here feels they should win and would like to win.

But mostly I'd like to think we're all here because we truly like to create.

Sure, it's okay to feel disappointed if your project doesn't win. Seven of us are going to feel that way. But I would hope we won't become @$$holes and be poor sports about it if we do. Heck, look at me. Mine's ranked seven of eight right now. That's next to last! Stuck at 17 votes. But oh well. So be it. I've got chapters four and five to try again.

Some people out there may not feel like it's fair, but you know what? Life ain't fair. Personally for me, at the end of the day, whether I win or lose, if I'm satisfied with the product I create, I'm okay with it. Like many before me have said, film is subjective, just like all art. And this site is still in its infancy, so probably the majority of folks coming to it are drawn here by us entrants. So like it or not, those people are coming in with a bias towards who they like. Way I see it, it's the nature of the beast. Once rootclip really hits its stride and more and more impartial users vote, well, you know what? I'm sure there will still be more people upset by who wins and who loses. 'Tis the nature of the beast.

All that being said, there's still 2 days left to vote. So we all need to go out there and get as many more as we can. As for me? I'm just hoping to hit twenty before the end of this. Anyone out there wanna help me out? :)

Well, that's my two cents -- or maybe more like four cents -- worth. I don't normally post to comment boards -- just never been a habit for me. But seeing how some people were starting to act here, I had to say something.

We're all proud of our work. Good luck to everyone.

5/23/2008 at 10:44 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

Well, I know what you mean. Personally, I'm going to Digg and Stumble this site so more people come aside from being drawn to it by entrants.

nice job! way better than confessions of a sushi addict! :P

5/25/2008 at 6:10 p.m. by fiercedeityys

wondering what you were talking about, i checked out "confessions of a sushi addict." it was not funny, nor that interesting. then i saw it was directed by kim and produced by jonah, and suddenly realized you must be from IC.

5/25/2008 at 6:17 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

Haha, yeah, I would hope this is better than confessions of a sushi addict D:

5/25/2008 at 6:50 p.m. by FungusRidden

XD

If I had to guess -- and I will -- that's totally Matt or Vishal. XD

Nobody hates Sushi more, I'd imagine.

5/25/2008 at 9:25 p.m. by FungusRidden

Also, SomethingsAwry: Confessions is a Student Academy Award-winning short film one of my professors produced as a grad student at NYU. It doesn't actually say a whole lot (mostly for the Student Academy Awards), but it apparently was at least better than any other student film that year. :<

Also, if you look closely during the opening shot, one of the people in the meeting is the Verizon network guy, back before he got (mildly) famous.

5/25/2008 at 11:24 p.m. by Ambuh

ouch on the head, i like it.................................

5/26/2008 at 10:39 a.m. by vote082

it's a popularity crap-shoot. We're like slater, but zombies is like zack morris.

5/26/2008 at 10:53 a.m. by Cadillac

Zombies should not be winning. the video sucks. but somehow, magically when you guys gain a vote they gain one too

5/26/2008 at 11 a.m. by hello

That's because the person who made it is in front of the computer creating email accounts. The rootclip guys should make an example out of the zombies and disqualify it.

5/26/2008 at 11:04 a.m. by vote082

yeah hello. disqualify zombies! cuz our voters are real people who we aren't making up on the spot, but not as fast as zombies can. we're not doing exactly what they are. really.

5/26/2008 at 11:08 a.m. by SomethingsAwry

I tried to rally support, as you can see by the suspicious looking name my friend took right there, by begging and calling in all the favors I had (btw you better not have resorted to that because you voted more than once)

Sadly, though, not even an army of people I KNOW can help me now.

5/26/2008 at 11:12 a.m. by Cadillac

I know. I got all my military buddies to vote, and a bunch of my friends back home, but even they cant outvote zombies. I really am eager to see the week 6 competition though, when its the same group of in EVERY video submitted.

5/26/2008 at 11:18 a.m. by bean6111

hey guys. this is really cool. good to see some new stuff. Good luck with the rest of this.

5/26/2008 at 12:02 p.m. by FungusRidden

Well. I can't say I saw THAT coming...

Unless somebody's actively video taping Soulshine sitting at the computer registering e-mail addresses, any accusations being thrown out there are just wild suspicions (but not without reason; 90ish votes in about an hour is the most impressive display I've ever seen).

Gotta hand it to them; quite a game plan stored up, and the record lives on.

I will, however, continue to question why the Thriller clip was not requested to be removed, even though it certainly wouldn't impact the quality or popularity of their submission. But, congrats to them anyway on a fierce, fierce fight and a great voting campaign. We did our best to force the upset. ^^

5/26/2008 at 12:16 p.m. by FungusRidden

My apologies, also; there was no "90 votes in an hour," but I was out for the Memorial Day parade this morning and came back to find our 155-123 lead bouldered into a 183-207 loss, and a novel's worth of conspiracy comments.

Thanks to everyone who voted and participated (even if you kept us from college tuition money). Keep 'em ignorant, as they say. ;) We'll be back next round, if for no other reason than to see what we can come up with for a story based around zombies. :3

5/26/2008 at 9:10 p.m. by ing

sucks to be you guys. rightful winners of ch. 3, yet screwed out of your winnings.

5/27/2008 at 2:37 p.m. by ScoresEasy

At least you got the $500 right? That's pretty cool. Are you planning on submitting something for the next round?

5/27/2008 at 8:20 p.m. by FungusRidden

We certainly plan to submit again for Round 4, although we don't expect our (lawyer-awarded) legacy to continue into the next chapter. But, one win is enough for anyone, and if there's to be a second, Chapter 6 would be the ideal place to have it... ;)

5/28/2008 at 8:06 p.m. by Fink

can anyone tell me which video won? was it wrong guy or zombies? because zombies shows more votes but this one shows up as winner

5/28/2008 at 9:31 p.m. by fiercedeityys

"the wrong guy" is the official winner, and chapter 4 takes off where "the wrong guy" ends.

5/30/2008 at 2:54 p.m. by root

Ok, I was thinking about the direction I'd take this... and I'm running into a HUGE plot issue. If Tony is "after what's inside the case", why is his lunch in it? I understand the line was for humor injection but it causes a major problem. Of course stretching the imagination could come up with some crazy reason it's there. But, I'm just wondering, is there an explanation from the creators?

5/30/2008 at 3:08 p.m. by root

It was supposed to be delivered to him very officially and "good luck" was wished. If it's his, and was stolen, why is it being delivered and why is the deliverer concerned with what happens to it's contents? If it's Tony's and someone else had to do something with it and bring it back to him... am I really supposed to believe he'd pack his lunch in a vessel that somone else would be carrying all day? What do you got?

5/31/2008 at 4:17 p.m. by fiercedeityys

if you listen to the dialogue, he actually says "sometimes I also keep my lunch in there," which either could mean he also is keeping a lunch in there, along with whatever else, or maybe he's just being a sarcastic dick to Scott? maybe the spoon has some deeper purpose and really isn't something with food? you never know.

5/31/2008 at 10:33 p.m. by FungusRidden

Fierce is right; Tony distinctly says that he "also" keeps his lunch in there "sometimes." I'd cite a handful of other ideas about what groups can do instead of explaining how a spoon could have value, but then I'd much rather see the creativity the other groups will use to determine the course of their entries for Chapter 4. :)

I will, however, say this: I don't intend to tell a story in which a spoon in the briefcase is somehow the item of value. Good luck if you do, though. :0

6/1/2008 at 10 a.m. by root

I was never under the impression that the case had only a lunch in it, I understand there is something more important in it.. The problem still stands. HIS lunch makes it HIS case to some degree, like Tony possessed it very recently.

It was either stolen from him and returned, or (with Tony's knowledge) was planned to be borrowed and brought back (and Tony still thought the case was a good place to keep his lunch), or fierceD's suggestion that he's being sarcastic. All of these explanations currently seem very silly. I'm hoping someone will be able to explain it. :/

6/1/2008 at 3:25 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

root, the intention is that scott only took a quick look at the briefcase, and probably failed to notice something like a, say, false bottom

If I'm not mistaken, I think it's your job to elaborate on this ;)

6/1/2008 at 3:41 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

Quite frankly, this is not a "huge" plot issue unless you've already cemented in your mind how the story is supposed to go. That, of course, would be very silly, eh?

6/1/2008 at 4 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

Also, seeing your past history of harsh remarks against this video, perhaps I can just write your comments off as "targeted nitpicking", especially as you fail to remember that the video you so lovingly supported would have withered just as much in your eyes if only you applied the same critical gaze that you're sporting in these series of comments, instead of looking at in through rose tinted glasses.

I realize that the spoon issue might be a little confusing if you focus on it and that's all you think about (omg where could the spoon have come from, I don't think I can rest easy until the answer is found), but it certainly isn't plot altering. Tony could use the same suitcase over and over: perhaps this sort of thing is his job. Maybe the spoon is just to deter would be thieves, as they fail to see anything of value in the suitcase. Hell, maybe this whole story is just a red herring and Tony's friend from work gave him his suitcase back when he left it accidentally, and he was off to some important meeting. Maybe Tony doesn't even realize that the suitcase is empty except for the spoon. You can go anywhere with this.

6/2/2008 at 8:27 a.m. by jaytaylorthe1

I only asked 2 people to vote for me and that's because they live with me. I didn't want to ask people, to vote for me; I wanted to know how many votes I could get via people who liked my work. That's what I care about in this competition. I think you all suck for asking people to vote for you. I think it reunions the fun and the point. Oh well. Congrats on winning, out of all the videos (other than my own) I liked yours the best.

6/2/2008 at 11:13 a.m. by FungusRidden

I'd also add that focusing on explanation is not the primary focus; take a look at Underworld for an example. The point isn't "who are these new guys?" and "how is Tony linked in with them?" If we're content just to watch the video and understand there are additional people who are clearly connected with Tony, then I think it shouldn't be a stretch to understand that the briefcase was recently transferred to Robert to service somehow.

And that's presuming you're intent on trusting that Tony is being completely literal and serious with his pudding comment.

6/3/2008 at 7:24 p.m. by FungusRidden

Oops. Didn't mean to ignore you, Jay. :<

I don't think anyone hear means to suck, so much as play the system to its extent. Right now, there's a huge emphasis on marketing your film built into the site's design. It certainly sounds like the site staff is attempting to curb that aspect off and make each vote-race a cleaner, rounder competition. Perhaps it won't matter who asks who to vote in Rootclip 3...

Glad you got some level of enjoyment out of this entry, though. :) If a film isn't fun to watch, it might as well be a teaching aid.
