Judges' Votes
Creative and well shot. This one gets my vote. Effects were great and the story was fun.
Blast from the Past gets my vote. I think all three were some of the best to date but Blast was indeed the strongest. Well developed script, nice slick effects, good camera work except NOT ENOUGH CLOSE UP'S...!!!!! The 180 was crossed when our two actors greet each other at the house and it became some what confusing at he beginning of their dialogue. Speaking of which, the dialogue was well developed and the acting was pretty good.
This is an excellent way to close out this story and It was so much fun and pain looking at each and every one. Thanks all for letting me share in this experience..... I want to encourage all passionate filmmakers to continue this journey. Learn how to use lights to set mood, cameras on tripods and not everything handheld. Filmmaking is a craft and it can be learned. Last but not least, The first rule of filmmaking is.... There are no rules.... Cheers, Stephen
This is really well done. The music, editing, colors and FX all come together to make this a very compelling film. I love the jump cut editing style and also the way color is used in the piece. The story flows really well and it all makes sense. Acting is not bad, but....well I'm tough on that one. Anyway, well done.
This one has to get my vote. Not only is is almost startlingly well made, but it also fills in the plot holes and hilariously morphs with another RootClip story - all while tying this story up in a bright Christmas bow. Very clever, and funny too.

Make sure you've watched chapters two and three of Chance Encounter
HAHA. Good job Jake. Way to really bring it ALL together. HAHA, classic.
Wow, you wrapped up all the loose ends and left the option for a sequel.
You even explained some things from "Chance Encounter".
Nicely done.
Nice job!
Good luck!
Awesome! very well done guys!
Awesome!
@KRN did you see the tribute to Joe Votero?
Nicely done. No unnecessary cliches, tied up several loose ends -- which took some effort. Lighting's a bit dark, but it's got my vote.
I did notice, and I loved it.
"An incredible fast-paced montage of nostalgia. Rootclip followers will be on the edge of their computer chairs. Two thumbs up using multiple accounts, fine holiday fun."
Haha, thanks KRN! I was trying to think of what would be the best name for the hospital, and decided I'd make it in loving memory of your video that I'm still shocked didn't win.
wow thats really cool how you tied it all together! impressive. unfortunately our video wasn't finished due to technical problems. But this is great!
Awesome!!!
Great job, dude! Glad to see that Jim lives on! ;)
Amazing!! Great job!!
you're a pain in the ass jake.
the switch guy is reallllly cute Jake.
and sorry we killed off your woman man
oops, not your woman
I especially liked this one because it does manage to tie up the loose ends (not only here, but also adding connections to other previous competitions here). Considering how unmanageable this beast of a competition seemed to become, I'm really glad someone put it to bed successfully without dismissing key sections or characters of it out of hand. :-) Nicely done.
jake you the man
Excellent! Just as enjoyable as always, and packed with a cleverness seldom seen! THIS is an expert Rootclip entry with layers of thought involved -- just wrapping up THIS story was a challenge enough, but you definitely went above and beyond, and it pieced together very nicely!
Best of luck, Jakus! :>
Very nice...good luck!!!
that was amazing jake. see, i made an account and everything for you. you better win now. nicely done though.
yoo this video is hott jakee...gewd job wai to pull things all together and make it into a gewd story... hahah too bad i wasnt in it like in chapter 2 but at n e rate awsome job yah digg!
kudos to you guys. this entry was bad-ass.
Good Luck! Great job! Glad to see you enjoy doing this and you sure are creative! Mrs. Mattice
I have finally mastered the tricky thumb! Great entry Jake!
I may be your mother JakusB, but truly I am sick of doing your laundry because you have to film edit YET again! Truly, I am blown away by your creativity, attention to detail and your infusion of humor- IT MUST because I let you watch Goonies, Princess Bride, Indian Jones, and Brisco County Junior- way too much! ooxx JakusB's Mom
That movie list explains a lot.
Zombie 1 is an outstanding thespian, don't you agree? Good work Jake!
CLASSIC!!! Jake you are the man -- I loooooooved it!!!
hah nice job with the Back to the Future references Jake :P
was that a 1967 austin fx4d london taxicab in the background?
I do think it was. Must belong to the best coffee shop owner ever! =D
just in time!
grrrrrrrrrrrr
I must say Great special effects. Now for the part Im trying to figure out who is the guy that Doctor Frank gets the tank from? I've never seen him in any of the Dr. Frank episodes, and I've watched every one of them, also who was the girl that got hit by the car? I thought it would have been cool if that had effected the future. Overall I feel the story is very very very weak, but the FX's was great, nice to see people keeping Video Copilot in business. If this was a competition about who could do the best FX you would win. But I feel no matter how good the fx are if the story can't carry it than it's not worthy. example: The Phantom Menace, great fx lousy story.
LLL.
Congratulations! It was fun competing against you, hopefully it won't be the last time. Great movie you deserve the win see you next story...
So...I haven't commented before, sort of watching in the wings, but I am now gathering that this competition is more about who can pull off effects and master tutorials than it is about filmmaking, right? I say this because you just don't see these types of things in real short films at real film festivals. Those events are more about story and cinematography than about effects. Having entered several film competitions, I can firmly say that films with these types of After Effects crutches typically do not make the cut. Not critizing, just hoping to pass on some wisdom about making a quality film.
Congrats!
@Tinsoldier and Josh Thanks guys! It was great competing against you guys too. I'm sure it won't be the last time.
@Lefty Watch the previous story of "Chance Encounter" (http://rootclip.com/stories/chance-encounter/) and you'll understand the depth of the story Also, if you pay attention in the video, when Frank pulls into the drive way, theres a GIANT sign that says "The Switch Guy". Meaning, its the switch guys house.
@Knoxvegasctor Rootclip is a very, very different sort of film competition. Obviously these films are not going to look like what they do at some of the big ones. With rootclip, your given 10 days (rather than months or even years) to make your film. You also have to keep it under two minutes (unlike 10, 30, or 60 like most competitions.) You also have to follow a very strict story line that has been set up for you (also, a very different concept from most film competitions.)
I'd like to give a huge thanks to all my actors, supporters, and the judges. Never could have done it without you guys! Thanks a bunch!
Well said JakusB. I hope some of the new people that voted during Dr. Frank take the time to look at everything Root Clip has created so far.
You may have missed many of the jokes because they referenced previous submissions.
Thats great you brought back someone from another film. However if you were only watching the Dr. Frank story " Like myself" you would have not know who he was. As a director it's your job to tell a story with the material at hand, not in hopes people have seen any other films that you did. What about the girl? You made a point in the film not to mess with the timeline and here this girl gets killed. I was waiting for the big pay off in the future about her being killed but was let down. Any way Congrads on winning your FX is very well done, now just bring your story telling up to par.
LLL
@ lefty-Wow, you just don't listen JakusB said "@Lefty Watch the previous story of "Chance Encounter" (http://rootclip.com/stories/chance-encounter/) and you'll understand the depth of the story"
In chapter 2 of Dr. Frank the Hospital is blown up and that linked to the "Chance Encounter" story line.
So go look at chapters 2 & 3 of "Chance Encounter" and the rest will make sense.
This is the most clever writing if you only pay attention.
and Lefty if you were referring to the Switch Guy in you last post you should just give up. He was mentioned in chapter 1 & 2 of "Dr. Frank".
Lefty,
First of all, welcome to RootClip. I would like to promise to keep this short, but I simply can't. David Moon--next time I'm e-ing you for witty editing ;-).
Lefty--Your dismissal of JakusB's work as mainly nice FX work is belittling. Let me explain why...
The way Jake layered the story to include references to other storylines and segments is something that's been done in subtle (and not so subtle) ways for eons. Not only does it show an attention to detail and rewards regular followers of RootClip who are "in the know" but it also can encourage curious newbies (perhaps like yourself) to spend a little more time on the site searching for those references.
Comic books have done (and still do) this frequently by referencing previous events in previous issues and soap operas build entire subplots (yeah, they do occasionally have subplots--when they have plots at all ;-) around obscure moments several seasons back. It's one more method of hooking a viewer (which I'm sure you know there are many ways to hook them as all viewers are distinct) into a story or particular venue. It could be likened to an "Easter Egg."
"As a director" your job may be to "tell a story with the material at hand" (which, I must argue would make you a pretty lame director if you don't add some aspect of your ideally unique vision to a film's script you're directing--but I digress...) but AS A WRITER, you get to create that story--hopefully creatively :-). At RootClip, JakusB gets to be (and do) whatever he wants. RootClip is a creatively open venue as a result.
The nice thing is, as with any truly complete ending of a story, JakusB's final segment of Dr. Frank is fine as a standalone (if you read signs like the one outside the Switch Guy's home) and yet it dovetails nicely to fit in with the rest of what could (at this point) be considered part of a growing RootClip "mythology." Nice work, JakusB! :-)
@SMRG, Your comment makes sense only if RootClip is intended to be one big story that is continuous and that all competitions are part of that big story and not separate competitions as appears the creators intended. The attempt at comparing RootClip to the comic book universe is ill-conceived. Comic books are, for the most part, intertwined with characters that know one another. It makes sense for them, but not for RootClip (unless, of course, this site is intended to be a small pond where only a couple of big fish know each others every move and all others be damned). In your own words, the "RootClip Regulars". How are others suppose to feel welcome? Basically, you are saying if someone wants to get involved here, then they need to first do their homework and get to know the regulars and all their past work. As far as trying to argue the "creative" issue, I hardly think a car that is a time machine that travels through time once it hits 88 mph is JakusB being creative. That "vehicle" sounds oddly familiar. And, I am sorry, it is clear that JakusB's final installment can in no way stand alone (unless of course he is creating some bigger picture with all his past entries that we cannot see). Don't defend someone just to defend. And, in defense of lefty, JakusB's FX were nice. But, again, most any editor who owns After Effects can pull up a Video Co-Pilot tutorial and do just as good. So here is the bottom line: either RootClip is a site where all would-be filmmakers can partake whether they were here from the beginning or have yet to start OR it is a site devoted to a small group of people who have basically claimed it for themselves to compete and entertain one another and have made it unfriendly to outsiders. You decide.
@ Knox --I have decided. ;-) Except for a few folks who have issues with sour grapes, RootClip is a VERY welcoming group of individuals-- filmmakers, viewers and judges alike. Let's clear a couple things up. I only defend people or ideas that I think are worthy of defense. I also know that JakusB can defend his own work, so I'm absolutely superfluous here.
I doubt anyone here feels they are "big fish" in a small pond. Most folks seem to have their egos in check. Most are thankful to participate. I'm going to gloss over your issue with the comic book connection because I just don't have the time or interest to simplify that particular issue even further.
Let's keep this easy, eh? 1.) JakusB's stuff is more than good FX. 2.) He thought out a script meant to wrap up all the loose ends and filmed it successfully. 3.) He thought enough of the RootClip "regulars" to toss in some references (which should not be viewed as any sort of barrier to newbies--all you have to do is watch some earlier clips--I did when I started nosing around). 4.) He also tossed in references to other films (that non-RootClip watchers may have seen and been able to recall). 5.) 4 of 5 judges (whose opinion counts waaay more than mine or yours) preferred his and could give clear reasons why.
And, my previous comment still makes sense regardless of interconnectivity of storylines or separation--an eye for detail, layered storytelling, occasional Easter eggs and even snazzy FX are good things in film (imho).
Every time someone new contributes to RootClip, we welcome them, make comments regarding their submission and add some constructive criticism. If you haven't felt properly welcomed here, I'm truly sorry. This site welcomes new talent and tries to foster it. I know your guy didn't win this time, but there've been plenty of times that JakusB's been left on the outside, too. He just doesn't quit. Remember, too, that this site is still young, so, yes, there will be folks who know each other and play back and forth--that's part of the whole fostering and honoring deal. You and yours are certainly welcome here, but please don't try to belittle or dismiss someone else's efforts.
Congrats, Jakus! Good to see one of our Rootclip buddies win it all! :D
woot! Jakus ftw! Great Job homie! let me know if you need help carrying that huge check.
HOLY FU(ck) THAT WAS AMAZING!!!
