Cheesy effects, lots of energy, a final twist. This one just beat out The Briefcase, which went just a little too sober in tone and a bit too self conscious of its effects (which were good). Igor and the Sat morning cliff-hanger feel sold this one.
Comments
this would have worked for the second chapter, you guys kind of went back in time i like the rabbit though it should have killed someone.
Hmm... wheres your music from when you guys are spinning around and land on the table? It sounds extremely familiar... Halo maybe?
First off, cliffhangers usually begin with a brief recap of the last episode. Watch most any episodic series and you will see this ... "Last time on (insert show title)".
Second, all our music came Adobe Soundbooth which is a high end program that you get the Adobe Production Master Collection. The sound effects are royalty free from the net. We do short films on a regular basis and know all the rules. Check some others out here: www.youtube.com/tinsoldier8
Any of you other guys ever heard of the 180 line?
When stories do a "recap" they usually continue the story from there, rather than taking the story and shooting it off in a completely different direction. Also, had you taken the time to look at the guidelines for each chapter, chapter two was the conflict (which was established as the monster has escaped) and chapter's three and four were to be rising action. Throwing out the old conflict and putting in a new one, does not constitute rising action.
And just because something on the "net" says its royalty free, doesn't necessarily mean it is. Anyone can take anything, throw it up on a website and say that its "royalty free." You also want to check what the licensing is on the material, because a lot of it allows you to use it privately, but not commercially.
Yes, I have heard of the 180 line. There's actually a tutorial in the blog about ti.
So if you knew about it, why exactly did you choose to NOT use the 180 line? I have seen plenty of episodic series' where you think you know where it is going and the next episode swerves and does shoot off somewhere else.
Do you think you are trying to correct me? Do you think you know more about this business than me? Are you cocky, sarcastic, or just have no hobbies? I did not join this site to have a kid try to tell me how stupid I am. I am sure ROOTCLIP would not appreciate this sort of behavior running legit filmmakers off. Or maybe that is your approach: mark your territory and run off the competition.
Does anyone else ever have this trouble from this kid?
JakusB,
I am here for filmmaking and the community building effort that ROOTCLIP has created. With that said, I offer you luck and success in your efforts. I am now disengaging from our previous exchanges.
THX!
Hey Jakus, that song that sounds familiar is the same one from a hero is born. It's a customizable track in soundbooth.
@Jakus:
Let us do the policing around here, please.
WOW!
What exciting drama. Geez I miss you guys!
@ Tinsoldier, Calm down my friend. It's ok. Jakus means no harm, he was just concerned. I'm curious what constitutes a "legit filmmaker"?
Woah woah woah!! I did not mean to police or offend anyone in any way. Thats not my deal at all.
First off, I was in no way trying to police. I knew the song was familiar (and thank you to KRN for reminding me of where I heard it) and you've gotta admit, those guitar chords are a lot like Halo's. And my comment about royalty free music was not to just to you guys, but as a general statement to all. Just like any information you find on the web, you need to make sure its coming from a credible source.
Secondly, I was not trying to correct you, call you stupid, or say that I knew more about film making than you in any way, shape, or form. What I was referring to when I mentioned conflict and rising action, is this blog post: http://rootclip.com/blog/2008/sep/22/new-contest-doctor-frank/ where the guys asked everyone to follow a certain setup, that being chapter 2 is conflict, 3 & 4 rising action, 5 climax, and 6 resolution. I was not trying to step on any feet, I was just mentioning a guideline for this story thats been commonly overlooked.
To summarize, I was not policing, just thinking aloud. I was not teaching, I was referring to the setup. And I think if you look back, I have a pretty good track record. I doubt many people here have had much trouble from "this kid". I'm all about what rootclip represents, and I mean in no way to harm it. I hope I've cleared everything up.
Hey guys, you're making a freaking rootclip here. Stop taking this thing so seriously. i mean, dang, man...
@ Jakus
It's all good man.
Wow... elitist much? Can't we just revel in the camp without resorting to snobbery? Isn't that the point?
It's fun. Back off, people.
Loved it. I'm a big Linds Edwards fan, lol. Saw him in a couple of shorts at the2007 Secret City Film Festival (my fave was the distracted writer) and got to see him in action when my kids and I were extras in a Boys of Summerville ballpark scene or two. Thx for the Facebook email.
I like how you put this together but I am not sure about the story continuity. Just to clarify: Chapter 1 - Igor is about to flip the switch. Chapter 2 - Igor flips the switch, blows up the hospital and reanimates a humanoid sized thing that gets away or somehow ends up gone.
And in your Chapter 3 your telling us Igor becomes mentally challenged, the monster is not gone but is actually a bunny. Igor flips the switch again (without checking the wiring both he and Dr. Frank know is wrong) and changes Dr. Frank and Igor into girls.
I thought the idea was to accept what happened in the previous chapters and continue. But it might be just me :-)
We did this on a whim. No script, all in studio, in about 2 hours. We improv'd most of it and took the character progression from the lead we felt had been established in Chapter 2. Things like that are open to interpretation. It was our first time and had no real expectations. Just doing something to get started. And to practice some of our effects skills. And to have fun sharing with you guys.
COME ON ALL, VOTE FOR THIS ONE..... I WANT TO SEE WHAT THE 2 CHICKS ARE GOING TO DO NEXT.....!!!!
lol.....
Awesome clip
Great acting and story. Love your work
Love John Stewart's directing. Tinsoldiers and stewartsproduction are awesome.
I loved it. Reminded me of the old Sat morning sci-fi shows on tv. Go Tinman Go.
Thanks JJ!
Another quality product from the fine fellows at Tinsoldiers!! Great job my friends...you have my vote!!
I liked it. I think it takes the plot in a different direction that would be fun to work off of. If would not be hard to finish up the story with three more chapters. Well done!
Keep submissions under 2 minutes. Submissions over 2 minutes will be disqualified.
Sigh.
THX for watching! ROOT CLIP is a great platform for aspiring filmmakers to get out the camera and editing equipment and shoot something (a swift kick you might say). In addition, the networking opportunity is a great way talk with other filmmakers, share ideas and techniques, and just make new friends! Keep up the good filmmakers and ROOT CLIP!
Tinsoldier8 -
I wasn't trying to knock your submission in the least. I think that your video is well filmed.
However, the submission guidelines specifically state that all entries must be within a given length (in this case, 2 minutes) or they are automatically disqualified.
Your clip should never have been approved on the basis of violating submission rules. My concern stems from two points: 1.) I know that several individuals, including myself, have tried diligently to re-write scripts in order to meet the 2 minute threshold, and 2.) By allowing your clip to be voted on, it is drawing away from other clips that meet the guideline rules.
Best of luck to you and your film crew.
Katie Couric should have been in this one too
?
@ tinsoldier "Body Shift" Submission from chapter 2 had guys turning into girls and Katie Couric turned into a big bearded guy and it was funny.
Ah. Didn't see that. This is my first submission and first time on the site. I wish had gotten started sooner. This was fun. Have you had any submissions?
It's a bit silly and pointless, and it cycles back to repeat what's already happened, but the final twist is genius!
The other female in the video is Laurin Finney.
THX Cat. I didn't know Lauren's last name when we shot and I couldn't change it after I had already submitted. Sorry.
THX Rich! With this being our first time submitting to ROOT CLIP, we were just going for something goofy and fun. The twist to turn the guys into gals was an attempt to get some females into some principal roles. A world of spoofs and story lines could stem from them. It also gave me a chance to play around with some After Effects tricks I had not yet attempted. Editing ommercials and concerts don't always allow room for too much fun. But, THX again!
You know, if our epsiode was to somehow win, here is a great next chapter idea: Dr. Frank and Igor find that they are now females. Not only do they have to deal with the new bodies but, more importantly, what happen to the BUNNY!?!? Dun, dun, dunnnnnn! They could then go hunting rabbit, have someone in a big bunny suit terrorizing the town, have the bunnies multiply, the possibilities go on.
I thought submissions were supposed to be 2 minutes or less? It isn't fair to the videos who followed the rules (especially if this video gets judge votes.)
Most film festivals I have participated in like this (where it is a contest) do not count any credits or graphic text part of the actual film and judging is based solely on the content of the story. In many cases, shorts are accepted at any length but only judged on the first 3 minutes (in this case 2 minutes). In our case, the beginning and end are merely tags and have nothing to do with the story itself. Without the tags, our short is about 1 minute and 54 seconds long. However, I accept your correction and will keep this guideline in close perspective in the future. How many times did I say CASE in this post? Geez on me.
the content is so dumb i cant understand how a judge can vote for someone redoing part 2. Sorry guys.
Has anyone else noticed that only 80% of the votes have been accounted for? This must mean that there are two official judges who have yet to vote. Am I missing something?
@Zpiet - Gee, thanks for the encouragement.
About the timing.........technically, yes the timer says it's over 2 minutes. Really though, if this video were to win we would take out the beginning and ending "Blue Background" shots with the title and the '2B continued' for the full length clip, and based on that it's under 2 minutes.
Sorry for any confusion, we could probably word it 2 minutes OF CONTENT in the future. I take the blame for this one, because I approved it. You can start throwing tomatoes at me.............................now.
THX Kevin.
I liked the campy feel of this, though the recap/ varied story line left me a bit confused and seemed to eat up a lot of time. I checked out your videos on youtube, really solid work. Jeff, I'd be quite nervous around you on a farm....I'm looking forward to more from you guys that is reflective of the talent in those vids, welcome to rootclip!
and you other guys, 2 seconds? You want to hang him for this? As the potential reason for the 2 minutes and under rule I say....come on.....
also, yes, there are still 2 judges votes out there, the game isn't over yet
which kind of sucks.......because I may want to start in on a script ;)
THX bryceanderic for the kind words. I really appreciate you checking out some of our other stuff. I intend to make submissions to ROOTCLIP more like what we do on a regular basis we were just a little rushed this time around and feeling goofy. We made KNXVILGRL89 in a 10 hour film challenge. A little hard to watch but a truth that needed to be told. We did the Heinz for their contest last year. And the clip titled FEIGNED was the last minute of a 5 minute horror short we never finished. I too am a little anxious to see if we need to come up with the next part of the story. We just love making good films. Good luck to you and THX again for the welcome!
