Nicely catches the tone of the first chapter and adds a bit more cheesy comedy gold in the genuinely funny dialog. Acting is good, the fx shot is dodgy but effective, and the cliffhanger is superb.

I like this clip because it does a good job of keeping continuity of the characters and story line. The effects were really well executed and added so much to the story. Very clever writing and the end certainly moves the story to the next chapter. Shot/cam selection showed a nice level of sophistication.

I gotta go with these guys, JakusB and crew, for creativity, following the story line, ending with a resounding cliffhanger, and groovy effects. Nice going!

Shot pretty well and I think holds true to the first part of the chapter. I like the twist with the switch being wired wrong. The acting was a little whacky, but I think it fit with the mood of the story. Well done.

Hmm I see a theme ,do you hate doctors .

10/2/2008 at 9:31 a.m. by RMag

It's like, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog(opening line) mixed with Chance Encounter. It's a good video, unfortunately for you the same story line is starting to irritate me(monster wakes up and sneaks out) as I watch these videos in succession.

10/2/2008 at 9:46 a.m. by JakusB

@Jhonnyonthespot No... first of all, he's not really a doctor, hes a scientist. And a goofy silly one at that.

@RMag, Haha, yes, the beginning was a tribute to Dr. Horrible. Also, the reason for the "recurring storyline" is probably because in the real story of Frankenstein, the monster wakes up and runs away. This is supposed to be a modern rendition of the story, so thats why you see so many similarities.

10/2/2008 at 10:40 a.m. by SMRG

Ok, I totally liked the references to Dr. Horrible, the opening blast/strobe, the sizzly little effects on the monster's sheet and the reference back to "Chance Encounter." It's sort of a tribute to the site that infrequent participants could miss out on (or a bonus if you DO follow RootClip competitions).

I loved the little comedic flashback from Igor: "It seemed simple enough" (or whatever ;-).

Nice use of KRN's extended scene dialogue--although I wouldn't have come out and said it necessarily in your credits, I might have instead waited for KRN (or another viewer) to eventually make a comment about it in the forum section (again, sort of a little treat for folks "in the know." ;-) Just a thought.

I know what RMag's saying as far as similarities, but I also know you all came up with and shot your own concepts totally independently of each other (unless there's another related site I haven't seen yet where you all conspire...;-)

I did find myself wishing there was a little more interest in the background--a few static visuals (or visual reference to previous product placements) would have encouraged more folks to watch again to catch some subtleties.

10/2/2008 at 11 a.m. by SeekFirstProductions

I liked this one for the sole fact I can play off of it with my original idea (more bluntly, you didn't define what the monster was and thus you leave the viewer to decide for themselves, I'm hoping to play off of this because in my opinion it is more suspenseful NOT to show the monster, and thus it leaves us with a greater twist at the end).

10/2/2008 at 11 a.m. by SMRG

Heyyy-- Tell Gee to stay off the camera. Man! Just because I landed the UWSP gig he's gotta' get all "I've-won-an-award-for-my-work" and start actually giving people a hand HERE in competition. I see how he's angling-- ;-) Hmph!

Anyhow, nice work guys. Gee's got the Blake job to shoot, so maybe that sudden shakiness ;-) when the switch was flipped will clear up with practice :p.

Now get back to work and really start predicting where to go with Chapter 3 based on the entries here (I know you've been thinking about it already ;-). Wow--I better get back to work, too!

10/2/2008 at 11:54 a.m. by FungusRidden

You and Tony both, Jake! Really nice effects and, as always, stunning music... but just not quite the direction I was hoping to see. I appreciate the pitch back to Chance Encounter (that digital window was awesome), and the flashback with Igor's wiring was great, but in the end, it just seemed a little bit...sluggish... It's not a judgement about you or your talent, particularly knowing how fast you had to cram it together (and I'm glad you did). But, those are my observations about why I'm not sure this one's not at the same level as your other work.

I'm not saying I won't vote for it, but I'm undecided. It's going to be a tough, intense round again already!

10/2/2008 at 12:08 p.m. by charliechaplin

Hey-O nine entries!

Kind of missed it on this one. I wouldn't get caught up with the music as much because your letting some of it get to a sort of cheesy level. The Cinematography in this one is kind of lacking in comparison to your other entries. I wasn't really feeling the window with the "explosion." I understand that this story is somewhat of a farce but it didn't really work for me.

10/2/2008 at 12:08 p.m. by charliechaplin

Bright side is your name will get you some votes...

10/2/2008 at 12:36 p.m. by mattice

Nice job!

10/2/2008 at 12:46 p.m. by aplusjimages

We shot No Laughing Matter in 4 hours and then edited it the next day.

10/2/2008 at 1:38 p.m. by Yankees2

We shot this in one hour and I edited it together this morning =). Also, the cinematography is much different because
A. We had a veryy tight filming space
B. There was no one to play Dr. Frank, so I had to do it, meaning I wasn't at the camera the whole time.

I originally started this not expecting to win, but rather to put some jokes in. But I quickly became a "serious contender" which is awesome.

10/2/2008 at 1:41 p.m. by JakusB

Ack, my brother was logged in. That comment was from me.

10/2/2008 at 2:54 p.m. by wblank

Jakus, why does it reference a hospital?

10/2/2008 at 3 p.m. by killerrobotninja

The hospital got blowed up in Chance Encounter.

10/2/2008 at 3:22 p.m. by JakusB

Obliterated actually. Also adds to Frank's sick sense of humor...

10/2/2008 at 3:42 p.m. by wblank

I participated in Chapter 5... and I did not know that.

10/2/2008 at 3:43 p.m. by wblank

And by Chapter 5, I meant Chance Encounter.

10/2/2008 at 3:55 p.m. by JakusB

It wasn't a huge thing. KC tells the stranger that they need to get April to a hospital, and he says "You mean the one that was obliterated in the explosion?"

10/2/2008 at 3:58 p.m. by wblank

Right right. I remember now. Thanks.

10/2/2008 at 4:31 p.m. by stargirl2174

nice job jet again jake.

10/2/2008 at 4:52 p.m. by davidmoon

I cannot wait to see all of the new entries when I get home. I'm slaving at work ... oh so familiar.

Just by the screen freeze, this looks great, Jake.

10/2/2008 at 6:24 p.m. by davidmoon

Quite excellent Jake. Absolutely your best work so far.

10/2/2008 at 8:13 p.m. by oolala182

Nice job, Jake. =]

10/3/2008 at 12:38 a.m. by RMag

@JakusB Well you've convinced me then. I just watched this again and the others, again. And it was either this or the Lego one. But I agree with whoever said that it leaves the creation of the monster's look up to the next chapters, I think that is a strong point in this.

And, duh, on my part for ignoring the original story of frankenstein.

10/3/2008 at 10:20 a.m. by tschuchart

yhea, that was cool.

10/3/2008 at 10:57 a.m. by rocknessmonster

hi

10/3/2008 at 12:24 p.m. by jhonnyonthespot

Hi? Lol ore high

10/3/2008 at 12:59 p.m. by jhonnyonthespot

I was just thinkin isn't it a conflict of intrest if the creator of the original lets you use dialogue he created.

10/3/2008 at 1:54 p.m. by killerrobotninja

my deleted scenes are publicly available on Vimeo and killerrobotninja.com. Jakus found them and asked if he could use some dialogue from it. It didn't make the final cut, so more power to jake for having good taste in web surfing ;P

10/3/2008 at 4:37 p.m. by jhonnyonthespot

@krn I to have been lookin around on your site for a bit now ,that music vidoe is fantastic . Personally I would have waited to put up the Dr.frank deleted scenes til after the contest . I'd like to hear your comments on all the video's (you being the starter ).who's do you like best and why , what vid picks up best from yours and wich would you want to continue from? Oh and will you be making all the round 1 video's ?

10/3/2008 at 6:51 p.m. by killerrobotninja

thanks for the compliments. I think I've been pretty vocal about the submissions so far, no? I'm still undecided about my favorite. Each one has it's own charm for different reasons. I honestly was expecting more non-monster spins, but I guess folks are keeping in the Frankenstein vein... which is cool.

As far as all the round 1 videos coming from me... they asked me to make one, so I did. I love this site and was honored to be able to help out. They have some very talented video people on their own team... but if they are in need, who am I to say no? :P

10/3/2008 at 7:48 p.m. by JoshuaJMills

Anytime doves sing you know it is a big deal! Good work guys I enjoyed it.

10/4/2008 at 11:42 a.m. by GregBrentonUdellWedding2009

Is it just me or is the guy playing Frank look like a chic? Good work otherwise fellas (or should I say girlfriend).

10/5/2008 at 4:24 p.m. by childofman

You mean the hospital that was obliterated in the explosion at the end of Chapter 4 of chance encounter? Just spoiled your secret. Stop trying to work in previous Rootclips and start being original, like barsandtones.

Got em.

10/5/2008 at 8:12 p.m. by davidmoon

I think it's pretty clever.

10/6/2008 at 8:23 a.m. by moviefanatic

I think the trick is to make something that can stand alone as a completely seperate storyline. And the community tends to constantly reference past contests/entries to where it's just becoming a big joke.

I would like to see this competition stay away from Santas...

10/6/2008 at 9:56 a.m. by FungusRidden

HEY. >:O

Every group of people on the face of the planet, once they've been together long enough, will begin to reminisce about "the old days," whether or not new recruits will "get it."

The beautiful thing about this site is that new recruits HAVE the ability to see what the in-jokes are about; when this happens on forums and discussion boards, it's a bit harder because rather than watching three short films, you find yourself pouring over thousands of threads and zillions of posts.

I personally enjoy in-jokes; they've helped our community bond a lot and have created some extra "oomph" of character to the site.

10/6/2008 at 10:28 a.m. by SMRG

I'm with FungusRidden on the whole inside-joke-thing, childofman. Just because a film maker's clever enough to integrate references to additional pieces previously posted on the site (thereby building interior site traffic as newbies try to figure out the references), it does not detract at all from that film maker's inventiveness. I like to see things that show a competitor's looked around the site and is capable of showing how different story lines could potentially dovetail together (that takes thought and creativity, in itself). Entire movie/entertainment sub-genres are built on inside jokes and references to other movies.

I, for one, like the feeling I'm occasionally being rewarded with a vaguely veiled reference because I've looked through almost every single clip here. I'm not watching Dr. Frank expecting Shakespeare or anything tremendously highbrow, but I'm watching it for sheer entertainment value, expecting something that's the lovechild of Young Frankenstein and Dr. Horrible--with definite differences, of course.

And, childofman, the reference JakusB made to the exploding hospital was no big secret (unless you've never watched RootClip before your epiphany in the comments), and that's what makes it fun. Anyone who pays attention gets the joke. :-)

10/6/2008 at 11:07 a.m. by killerrobotninja

agreed.

10/6/2008 at 11:12 a.m. by Jkblaze

yoo u cant hate on this one u guys im in it lol

10/6/2008 at 11:52 a.m. by killerrobotninja

The user vote isn't without bearing. These fake votes could sway things. The real peeps should retract their sympathy votes.

10/6/2008 at 11:53 a.m. by killerrobotninja

oh sorry Jakus, that was meant for BarsandTone.

10/6/2008 at 1:15 p.m. by davidmoon

The clip strain is pretty goofy - I think it lends itself to parody.

10/6/2008 at 1:15 p.m. by davidmoon

Oh, and great Job Jake!!!

10/6/2008 at 1:26 p.m. by Filmdreamz

I'm not saying that this entry is terrible, but I fiind it interesting how our "esteemed" judges don't seem to care about the continuity issues with this film... Oh well.. the "popularity contest" vote strikes again!

10/6/2008 at 3:45 p.m. by FungusRidden

I admit, once it's got the name JakusB attached, I give it more attention. But that's inevitably what happens once you've been competing with someone longer, and are accustomed to the work. Steven Spielberg's been around a lot longer than Brett Ratner, so his name means more things to more people. You're not wrong; there's definitely a slight popularity swing involved.

But the winner of the last Rootclip, Chance Encounter, was someone who had never entered before until the last possible round, Chapter 5. Even though he was competing with several pseudo-veterans, he still walked away with two consecutive wins, including the grand prize.

Also, check my vote. It was for Legos, not this one. The downside to Jakus's name is, A) I know he doesn't necessarily need my vote to win and B ) I'm his friend now, and have thus somehow inherited the right to not be blindingly loyal to his entries if I see others I like. :P What else are friends for?

10/6/2008 at 5:17 p.m. by davidmoon

I'm a BIG fan of Jake, but I don't always vote for him. As we've witnessed since the judges, popular vote means squat.

10/6/2008 at 8:14 p.m. by dangman87

I'm pretty sure there are several other key differences between Steven Spielberg and Brett Ratner, and this certainly isn't a Spielberg film. Rob Cohen, maybe...

10/6/2008 at 8:36 p.m. by FungusRidden

Granted, dangman. Although, I was less disappointed by this entry than Indiana Jones IV. WHAT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE TO ENDURE! ;_;

I'll never forgive them for what they did! From the desk where he stood, I could hear Sean Connery's photo crowing, "THIS IS INTOLERABLE!" as we both sat horrified and watched the next great decimation of motion picture history.

10/6/2008 at 9:37 p.m. by dangman87

Yeah, you're right. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is not "Hold on, April."

10/6/2008 at 9:54 p.m. by killerrobotninja

dangman is like a legible manbearpig.

10/6/2008 at 10:09 p.m. by fiercedeityys

Yeah, "Hold On, April!" was better. Crystal Skull was one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen.

10/6/2008 at 10:23 p.m. by dangman87

It was no Brett Ratner film, though, that's for sure. Speaking of....

killerrobotninja is like a low-class Brett Ratner.

10/6/2008 at 11:17 p.m. by erik

Well done keeping the continuity of the characters. I really liked this submission and can't wait to see what they actually created, what happened to it, if there was actually any coincidence to the hospital.

Congrats! I can't wait to see what happens next!!

10/6/2008 at 11:42 p.m. by jhonnyonthespot

I don't know if its just me but I don't think this was the best or even in the top three ,this comment is not at jake this is at the judges . Like, most contestents don't even get a chance . It seems people vote on videos they know will lose as to face "weaker" people in the finals like how did no laughing mater and lemme be FRANK not get a judge vote but the lego music ripper did . Do the judges even know the rules? Something is just rubbing me the wrong way with this site, I was gunna enter next round but almost feel like its rigged.

10/6/2008 at 11:47 p.m. by jhonnyonthespot

Also how did jake end up with 47.8 he gained 40% and def had more then 7.8 . What's that mean he was docked and if so for what ....cheating maybe.

10/7/2008 at 12:11 a.m. by dangman87

Yeah, this site is definitely rigged.

10/7/2008 at 12:37 a.m. by wblank

Jhonny, I think you use your complaints about the site as an excuse not to submit anything.

10/7/2008 at 12:40 a.m. by FungusRidden

Interesting. What exactly IS going on with 33.3%? Did one of the judges refuse to give a full score? I totally support splitting the 10% between multiple entries, if that's what's at work now...

Also, I missed the licensed music in the Lego entry. Apparently so did Rootclip. And apparently, so did one of the judges. But it seems like RC's letting everything slide, provided it hasn't altered the results of the chapter... Hopefully next chapter cleans up some of the issues taking place here. :<

PS: Rush Hour 3 was about on par with Indy 4, IMHO. Gag.

10/7/2008 at 12:46 a.m. by dangman87

Rush Hour 3 was about on par with The Unexpected Encounter, IMHO. Gag.

10/7/2008 at 1:29 a.m. by FungusRidden

Guess I'll cry myself to sleep over that one. Although, from a production standpoint, that's quite a magnificent compliment. :>

10/7/2008 at 2:13 a.m. by dangman87

Yes it is. Now you, too, can aspire to be just like Brett Ratner.

10/7/2008 at 10:06 a.m. by fiercedeityys

At least Brett Ratner is out making films and not trolling message boards. Guess he's got the one up on you.

10/7/2008 at 11:35 a.m. by kevin

@ Dangman.......you wanna explain how your comments are constructive and also how you are a BENEFIT to the Rootclip community?

It's fine to criticize in the spirit of improvement, but you just sound like the kid in the corner who just tries to bring everyone down to your level.

That's just my observation from my corner.

10/7/2008 at 12:16 p.m. by dangman87

My comments are constructive because they piss everybody off and shake up the works. They inspire everyone to make better entries. I am a benefit to the rootclip community because of my uncanny ability to inspire others to do better. How are YOU a benefit to the community?

10/7/2008 at 2:12 p.m. by davidmoon

You are a silly man Dangman and quite pathetic.

10/7/2008 at 3:30 p.m. by kevin

I don't have add any value to the site. It's really a sensitive subject. I am going to cry now :(

10/7/2008 at 3:38 p.m. by davidmoon

@ kevin -- you make pretty bright green posts. That alone has value to me. When I think of green, I think of Kevin ... and Eric ... and leprechauns.

10/7/2008 at 3:40 p.m. by davidmoon

Sorry ... Erik. You kids and your goofy name spellings.

10/7/2008 at 4:28 p.m. by erik

Hahah! Luchauer doesn't help the whole Erik with a "k" thing either.

10/7/2008 at 4:57 p.m. by davidmoon

I actually thought Erik, but spelt Eric.

10/7/2008 at 5:37 p.m. by FungusRidden

The green posts are nice, but I'm still serious about introducing tiny tiled Santa background to the site. :< Let's at least keep that in mind for the holidays, kay?

10/7/2008 at 5:53 p.m. by davidmoon

Talking about the holidays ... how about a nice little side Rootclip contest? Best RootClip video Christmas card wins.

10/7/2008 at 7:12 p.m. by dangman87

Except that not every celebrates Christmas. Some people celebrate other holidays. You shouldn't discriminate.

10/7/2008 at 8:30 p.m. by JakusB

God you are annoying. Best RooClip video HOLIDAY card wins...

10/7/2008 at 8:33 p.m. by davidmoon

How does excluding discriminate on a privately owned Web site?

10/7/2008 at 11:27 p.m. by dangman87

Just saying...

10/8/2008 at 6:57 a.m. by davidmoon

This isn't a government funded or subsidized program ...

10/10/2008 at 7:37 a.m. by FamilymattersRULES

this is terrible. that is all

10/11/2008 at 8:18 p.m. by FungusRidden

It finally got the full judge score, though. So that's an improvement.

10/11/2008 at 9:01 p.m. by Malar

Wasn't it nighttime in Chapter 1?

10/12/2008 at 11:32 p.m. by dangman87

@ FungusRidden

Whew, thank god.

10/16/2008 at 11:30 a.m. by Jkblaze

wow yall dudes need to grow up yah digg

10/16/2008 at 11:56 a.m. by tinsoldier8

I think this site will advance soon in its entries thus taking the shooting to a whole new level. With that said, let me impart how crucial it is that you guys learn a few basic movie making techniques. First, and most importantly, story. Have a good story and stick with its consistency. You pretty much did that here. Second, know the 180 line. The 180 line is an invisible line down the middle of the screen that distinguishes where what character is in relation to the others. When two characters are having a conversation, they should remain on opposite sides to give the viewer a sense that the characters are speaking to each other from take to take. In this short, this practice is not utilized. They look at the camera, they end up on the wrong sides from take to take, etc. You must also learn to shoot profiles or over the shoulder reverses. This when the focal character is on one side and the viewer can see just a hint of the character's being spoken to shoulder. Straight line shots are unacceptable.

I offer this up to make you guys better filmmakers. I will post other basics as weeks go by.

10/16/2008 at 4:49 p.m. by JakusB

Tin, I am aware of all of this. I mentioned previously, that this was not an attempt to win when it was created. It was shot in twenty minutes, with an EXTREMELY limited shooting space. If you watch my other videos, you'll see that I practice such things. I made this video for a few jokes, one of them being back to KRN's deleted scenes, where I tried to recreate that shot as much as possible.

But I'm sure there were a number of people who were unaware of such things, and it was kind of you to inform them.

10/17/2008 at 9:38 a.m. by Jkblaze

Dont go hatein on myne and Jakusb's video now.. it was a good video for shooting it in a matter of 20 minutes or so and obviously it was good enough to win.maybe evry1 else shoulda stepped there game up.. but it doesnt matter we didnt make it to win we made it jus to put those deleated scenes in and see how gewd we wud do.. but we ended up winning, So dont hate apperciate yah digg

10/17/2008 at 11:10 a.m. by Jkblaze

and tin..if ur so gewd at this i wana see a submission and maybe u shud post a turioral jawn on here so us lower filmmakers can do better

10/20/2008 at 6:45 p.m. by tinsoldier8

I apologize if I offended anyone with my earlier post. It was not my intention. This was my first time posting anything on here and I felt attacked from the beginning (Jake made a suggestion that we used music from a video game) and I responded defensively. After a few posts, I retracted myself and wished him luck. Anyway, hope we can all get along and make some fun shorts.

12/1/2008 at 5:08 p.m. by Sweatyballs

heyyy Jake, you like my sign in name? I made it just for you lmfao
