Very nice. This episode was well directed. The shot were composed professionally. It looked like a tripod was used for some shots! One thing to remember though, nothing gives away a low budget like bad sound. It was fun to watch anyway.
Comments
Sweet! Preemptive strike!
Really, really nice camera work! Just super-duper! And the editing was very tight, as well. Also, the acting was fairly consistent. And the overpass seemed reticent of a certain other entry I remember...
Rootclip's really caught on fire with some serious talent, and this round only features a tiny handful of it... Chapter Six is going to be a fantastic showdown of shorts! :O
Nice. Very hopeless ending. Makes me wish I were... dead... in a kick-a$$ movie kind-of way. Camera = beautiful. And editing. The sound wasn't all that shabby either. And everything seems to be wrapped up pretty well... just one question...
HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN ALL THE CHARACTERS BREAKING INTO SONG IN CHAPTER 3?
Nah, kidding. No one needs a reason to do that. I was glad to see the characters from the 5th chapter having the same goals in this one... (with a bit of a twist of course). Good carry-over.
Some dialog was a bit rough, but what can you do? It's a short time to make a clip. Good work.
Friends don't shoot friends ... then drive off. Interesting twist.
Best watched with speakers LOUD
We actually had to cut out the musical segment for timing.
Dang! did someone get a jib, dolly, crane, and dof converter? This looks so good! great twist. Had a little chills-down-my-spine moment at the end there.
Best line: "April! But why?"
Almost as good as: "What if we don't?" from Nowhere to Run
That is the best shot short I have seen on this site. The story, however, takes one too many twists for my liking. But the good thing is that I'm not in charge here so that doesn't matter.
But REALLY good job guys. That was some top-notch professional stuff. But you know this.
Really good short, chapter six is looking GREAT for all competitors
WOAH, WOAH, WOAH! Out of left-field with this one.
Obviously put a little more work into this one than "Boom" All the entries for the final are very nice but this one is my favorite. Great Cinematography and nice twist(s)
I'm glad this didn't conform to the naming schema everyone else used:
The [adjective] [noun]
no contest here, "Just Business" has my vote hands down.
You know what would have put this one over the top? Showing the explosions. I fell like I'm missing that little bit of closure.
You guys did a great job with the story, though. how did you get those elevating shots?
We grabbed a crane from the studio on campus. Wanted to do the whole 'crane on a dolly' thing, but the track wouldn't fit in the 4Runner, so we had to stick with wheels.
I officially have a Rootclip problem. I sat through class this morning wondering what kind of reception it was getting and what kinds of issues people would pick up on that we missed.
It's ok joshutk, I feel your pain. I'm supposed to be conducting psych research, but I just can't get my head off of rootclip :argh:
Joe Costigan (aka Igor) is having a Rootclip problem here at work. He jumped the I'm-a-big-actor gun and started doing coke in the broom closet that he's been refering to as "my trailor". Then he trashed his cubicle and threw a phone at the receptionist at the front desk. He started screaming at the photographers and asking why he can't just go to the lunch room in peace. I tried to explain that it's a newspaper and their cameras aren't even on. He started crying and asking why he can't get the lead in a big picture like Leonardo DiCaprio in the Aviator. Tragic.
Just leave me be!!! I am a SUPERSTAR!! Don't Hate the player, Hate game!! Just because I've finally made it to the big top, does not mean(snff snff) that.... wait, what was I talking about. No mom I am not going back to Rehab
:<
You didn't give him a trailer? What sort of monster are you? ;_;
PS: Joshutk, I'm stealing your crane. Please notify the school that you have no idea who took it.
dearman at his finest
lol got that right
Holy Crap! This is so freakin' good! The cinematography is insane! Very, very professional! Unlike anything else on here. Very good job guys. This should take it all. Congrats.
Agreed!!!! gotta love those crane shots. This is above and beyond the competition!
Reminds me of that old Mitch Hedberg joke: "My sister wanted to be an actress, but she never made it. She does live in a trailer; she made it half-way. She's an actress, she just never gets called to the set."
LOL JoeC!
I'm having a Rootclip brain freeze as well. I keep trying to get to all the work I have to do to keep the lights on at this place, but I keep coming back to read all the comments. You all crack me up, and the entries are so good this round.
I'd like to play with KC's gun!!!!!!!!!!!
that tara chick is frisky...
Awesome!
Just... Awesome!!!
Great camera work and editing! Impressive!
quit checking the comments Josh :)
Great videography. Great sound, gripping dialogue. What a crew!
good job
Just business....
Wait...what happened to the bombs??? is there a chapter 7???
I don't understand why everyone is so concerned with the bombs. It says in the films that the nearest bomb is 150 miles away. There's no way they could have seen it. hahaha
Fantastic film angles, well-timed twists, and solid film quality and sound. This is far and beyond the best video of this series. You guys are special, and you've got my vote.
Great Job, cool video and editing #1
Bombs? Even at 150 miles away it feels unfinished.
Also, why'd KC "the godfather" put 3 bullets in the fall guy? That kind of makes him a victim.
I've noticed a lot of people have been asking about the bombs. I can tell you that when we started the process of thinking about how to end the final chapter, we went into it with the thought process that there is no way two average guys can defuse multiple bombs "all along the western seaboard." We wanted to provide insight as to why these guys are important into the overall story. I feel that we accomplished that.
On a side note, we recreated several clips from the previous videos further incriminating KC. We were going to use them in the flashback but had to cut them due to time constraints.
@Geek - We chose to have KC put three bullets into Ryan (the fall guy) because he learned of KC's involvement.
Nice camera work--that's gotta' be sweet having access to a crane and professional equipment like that! So you guys must be the "pros" ;-)
The acting was good, but I also have an issue with the lack of bombs (even after your explanation).Yeah, you did the little flashbacky thing to try and show the importance of Ryan and KC), but it just wound up leaving other things unanswered... I guess I can believe that the trucks that got rerouted were bomb-laden, but that yanks me right out of the illusion you're trying to create because I've worked on and around loading docks and know that stuff post-911 has caused tighter security. There are checks and balances. If you're implying through the flashback that there were 150 trucks rerouted with bombs set to go off "all along the western seaboard" it just opens up a bunch of problems, logically speaking. The simplest one being that truck drivers almost always individually sign off on their loads (many oversee the packing or do it themselves) and everything in most companies is carefully accounted for...I don't know, it just seems there are major leaps to be made for it all to work out correctly. I understand you've got a tight time limit--maybe I'm still missing stuff after viewing it multiple times. :-)
So that was one thing that bugged me. I also had issues with the variable audio. There were moments (most of the time, in retrospect) when the sound was fine, but then it dropped away and in one spot utterly disappeared (right after KC shot April--you can see KC's lips moving, in explanation, I guess, but it's still a mystery what he's saying).
I thought Ryan opening the journal and seeing KC was cool, but I had to replay the clip to figure out what any of the writing actually said. I did finally catch "Informant" before giving up on the rest of it. I'm sure it was a tough shot to get to work the way you wanted.
Also--thinking about Geek's comment about shooting Ryan... Yeah, even though KC knows Ryan knows, a smart guy (someone who'd be capable of shipping out 150 bombs on rerouted trucks in godfather-like style ;-) would have taken April's gun to shoot Ryan so it looks more like they were the only two involved. At this point there's a different set of 3 bullets in a guy (by the way, you don't "cap" somebody if you're going to kill them--you kill them) and a bullet from the same gun in the dead girl, but the only gun at the crime scene didn't even fire, so there's no match. So cops would say, "Hmm. Who's the actual shooter?" A search would ensue. A smart guy would make it more difficult (I'd hope ;-).
And, about KC's "godfather" statement... The godfather's lackeys do the dirty work (and no, they wouldn't cap a guy and then kill him, either).
The camera work was nice--very slick use of the crane. It's just the whole wrapping the storyline up thing that I didn't feel was totally working here. I can't wait to see what you guys put together for future Rootclip contests.
Good title and tie-in, too. :-)
The fact that SMRG can even break it down like that shows how much better this site has become. Try doing that with the nonsensical ending to the beta story.
That guys knows a lot about truck driving, murder workflow, and mafia hierarchy. Tough crowd.
The one thing I can easily disagree with... I think the audio disappears on purpose after April is shot. It's the whole 'disorientation and shot has lead to temporary deafness' thing. I personally found that very effective.
'disorientation and shock..."
this video sucks.
Thanks for the comments. I think your missing a few things.
One major thing to remember is that Ryan's line is about (6) trucks missing off the line. The 150 is only used when referring to the distance the bombs are away from them. I realize security is tighter but I would suggest watching season 2 of The Wire (an awesome show by the way). Deals with the same sort of thing..
You were right to point out the audio woes we had. We had problems in the exporting of our film and also had problems leveling out certain scenes due to filming outside, underneath an overpass where random cars/trucks drive by. However, you mentioned not being able to hear KC talk after April was shot. We wanted it to be that way (did it on purpose). We had the music up full and the assortment of quick cuts and fast paced music to give the illusion of what Ryan was going through. I had a feeling it wouldn't be understood by many, and that is partly due to the overall levels of our audio.
From the journal shot, we only meant for the audience to pick up on the fact that he was an informant the other information was irrelevant.
Finally, we faded to black after the shooting. Who's to say he didn't wipe the gun down, place it in April's hand and put April's gun in Ryan's hand? Uh? Think about it... :)
haha three comments happened while I was writing a rebuttal
@KRN- in reference to the audio- EXACTLY! glad someone got it
scott, you're so hateful....haha
natejones,
I just looked at your clip again--I had totally forgotten about the fade you did before KC drives away. Thanks for pointing that out to me--"blood in the gutters" and all that does open up for additional possibilities. Never watched "The Wire." Not much time to do any of that fun stuff. :-) This is my fun for the day...maybe for the week ;-)
Ok, now that you explained that you were trying to give the impression of the gunfire's aftershock (sort of "ringing in the ears" deal) that helps clarify. I thought you'd just missed laying in sharp audio there for some reason. So, hearing the concepts behind it all, that's better. I just wish I'd been able to see it all the way you guys envisioned it turning out.
@killerrobotninja-- This gal's (felt the need to clarify my gender) done a lot of stuff in her life thus far (and has been accused more than once of being filled with all sorts of odd bits of trivial knowledge). Plus the family line has...ahem...diverse experience in the realms of law enforcement and things on the opposing side, too. ;-)
Anyhow--very cool clips overall here. Glad I was asked to take a peek. :-)
@SMRG, thanks for the insight and actually reading into the story however you can see the limitations we had trying to conclude a story without breaking into song and dance and leaving the story nowhere.
I want a slice of that Fox guy.
Ow, ow, oh my chapter three entry. :<
We actually contemplated using a fast-paced song to answer every last question brought up in the past five chapters -- an intense twenty-second back-story that could summarize every event thus far. But then we decided it wasn't really necessary, for the 70's style we were taking.
I'm not particularly a fan of leaving off here, but that's the limits of Rootclip's six chapters and 3-minute storylines. Plus, I'm just a sucker for happy endings. No Country For Old Men made me furious. Those Coens will pay...
Awesome work here guys. Way to real em in The story was very original. (some things I didn't see coming.) And the photography and cinematography was stupendous. Way to tell the story and then finish it. You got my vote.
The flashback scene is REALLY good.
Nice focus-play, great camera action.
natedog you should win this hands down, they can't touch your story, very original
nice job guys - will put
Awesome!
freggin sweet!
when it comes to real people, this video definitely won! it's awesome!
Is it just me, or is Rich Cline confused between entries?
Not that it makes a huge difference in the wider scope, but that's my observation...
Yeah it looks like Jakus got a vote there.
is it too late to retract my vote?
From day one, I told each and every one of you that this sucked. Thank you so much for voting correctly. Josh Richard is a fake and a phony, and he needs to be stopped. Nathan Jones is the biggest waste of space this Earth has ever seen. Josh Queener needs to walk off a bridge right now. He disgusts me. The actors are talentless. Too bad they didn't die for real.
I wish everyday that I had not been involved with this group of talentless freaks. I'm sorry if I have disgraced my family name. Hopefully, the film making Gods will have pity on me.
I'm sorry Rootclip.

::sniffle::
I'm so embarrassed
I would've helped out more...but I gotta go to work, they're expecting me at work.
Wow, congratulations Scott Murphy. I never thought anyone could do it, but you have. You have officially taken trolling and absurd comments to an all new level. Please, leave Rootclip and take your comments with you. There is no reason, at all, to slander these guys. They worked hard and produced a good film. If you have some other sort of personal vendetta against them, please keep it off of rootclip. This is a site for film making, no verbal abuse.
Good try guys.
I liked it, but then again I'm not a judge
I assumed he was joking, since it says he worked on the project.
@ scott murphy,
stick to political satire man, pizza pie oh my was your best work in my opinion. Also, bring sideshow bob back!
@ Scott Murphy
I agree with JakusB. This is a serious and professional site, not one for slamming other filmmakers. These guys gave it their best and I think they produced a fine film, and you have no right for being so blatantly negative about it. You are just being downright disrespectful, and at least these guys made something. I mean, what have you made that was of any merit, Scott?
Next time, try being less of a dick and more of a gentleman. Thank you.
he was a part of this video obviously by the credits.. LOL
Lol.
At least it shows how serious the community takes fighting trollism. :P
Ouch, you got beat by a pretty good margin... Only one judge vote? Hopefully your not to dishartened to continue on. We need more films like this on the site.
I didn't mean for that to come out wrong, SORRY
Keep on truckin'
I'd still suck off that Fox guy.
If you pause at 2:44, you can see Matt Dearman's penis. (2 inches, black?)
yea, scott murphy, get your douchebag comments out of town! you have no right to comment on such masterpieces that YOU worked on in that tone of voice!
i mean, its not like one of your videos got posted on HBO's Entourage homepage, right? oh wait it did.
btw, lobsterdouce, that was a really funny shot. i caught it.
dont talk about me like that, stud
