This may not be the slickest entry, but it pushes the story further and leaves it open for much more to happen in future chapters - unlike some of the slightly too-clever entries.

Add some witty casting and a wonderfully corny use of the most cliched costume in cinema history and it gets my vote.

I like the unexpected twist of a single man in black being the cause for chaos, but a tad more interaction between he and the protagonists (a glance exchanged or even a more driven pursuit) would iron it all out a little smoother. Great entry, though, and it visually follows up nicely to Chapter 1. The music was successful in helping add to the intensity, too.

Good luck! :>

Nice take on Ch.1. I liked it.

7/29/2008 at 11:32 p.m. by davidmoon

That's the slowest moving serial killer I've ever seen. Otherwise, I like it.

7/29/2008 at 11:35 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Ok only One thing to say. This flick sucks hard I could make a better one dead.

7/29/2008 at 11:58 p.m. by davidmoon

Hey, as far as I know, no one has ever profiled a slow moving, hasidic jew maniac ...

Really, I thought it was well acted - just needs a more menacing ... um, menace.

7/30/2008 at 12:21 a.m. by jerrycommahello

You've got spunk, davidmoon; I like that. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback.

7/30/2008 at 8:56 a.m. by jaytaylorthe1

Rockstar, I hope you actually submit something; cuz I'm getting real sick of your pointless comments. Put your skills where that big mouth is and show us what your made of.

7/30/2008 at 9:03 a.m. by davidmoon

You heard him. He needs to be dead to submit anything good.

7/30/2008 at 2:30 p.m. by RockstarProductions

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Davidmoon you have no idea what film is all about. I dont care about the camera that anyone uses or the equipment that any one uses. As long as they have a good story (or cliff-hanger in this case) with atleast a rising and falling action along with a climax and origanle ideas, great acting, amazing and origanl shots ( in this case I think this "director" should have tried useing a tripod and avoided useing the zooms; horrible chase/running scene), good continuity, and wonderful contrast. That is what makes a good movie. I believe you know Les Lamphre ( A.K.A. Killer Robot Ninja), he would agree with me. His films on root clip fit my description. And so does "Boom" by joshutk. His is very well done and with out a doubt he will win between the other two submits. As for jaytaylorthe1, If you cant handle the heat then get out of the kitchen because when I look over people's films I can judge pretty harshley and I am very pick when it comes to a film. So if you've got somthing to say then show your skills and why dont you put your mouth where your money is.

7/30/2008 at 2:33 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Oh and Audio isnt always needed for a good film. You dont need to be told what is happening or what could happen or even what a movie is about through dialouge. Thats the beuty of film.

7/30/2008 at 2:41 p.m. by erik

LOL! @RockstarProductions, we may need to sign you up as a judge for our next contest. You could be our Simon Cowell in this American Idol of user-generated video!!

7/30/2008 at 2:50 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Haha!! I might just take you up on that LOL!

7/30/2008 at 2:56 p.m. by davidmoon

You may know how to judge 'harshley', but you should learn how to spell it.

Film is about effective storytelling, not shots and angles. I thought I was quite critical of the story of this clip.

7/30/2008 at 3:02 p.m. by RockstarProductions

First off. Typo, Duh. Second, I never said that a film is all about the shots. In fact I did say Something about the story. Read my comments above and then TRY to diss me.

7/30/2008 at 3:06 p.m. by davidmoon

I was wrong. It's all about the shots and the angles.

7/30/2008 at 3:09 p.m. by RockstarProductions

And also I dont see that much of a problem with this side of the story. I just needs more depth so that the cliff hanger is even better and so that it makes the other submitters think on how this story could continue on and make sense with the details of the story from the begining. But for this film it doesnt just seem original to me. To cliche. I think anyone could have seen it as people running from either a monstor or a super human killer. On a scale of 1-10 for the STORY I give this story a 7. Not too bad but not good enough.

7/30/2008 at 3:11 p.m. by RockstarProductions

@Davidmoon: I take it you have nothing to fall back on and diss or prove me wrong with. I figured that.

7/30/2008 at 3:24 p.m. by davidmoon

I give it a 6 at best. Even if the villain was more threatening, it remains predicable , and doesn't quite connect.

Actually, it's about the story. I was right the first time.

7/30/2008 at 3:26 p.m. by RockstarProductions

You need to get your head straight David.

7/30/2008 at 3:39 p.m. by RockstarProductions

For All of you people who are wondering why I am here it is not due to the prize money but to the joy of film making and to show my talent, which you shall see next chapter.

Even thought the equipment and the 2 k sounds very satisfing

7/30/2008 at 4:29 p.m. by davidmoon

Restraint is an honorable trait.

Hope there's a few more clips before the deadline tomorrow.

7/30/2008 at 4:50 p.m. by fiercedeityys

I hope there's a few more entries as well, david. None of these entries so far have impressed me one bit.

7/30/2008 at 5:47 p.m. by jerrycommahello

And now something for everyone else:

I would also like to thank you all for your plethora of comments and constructive criticism. A special thanks goes out to Erik and Allen for attempting to keep the peace. Sorry for the previous post, guys, but I've gotta stick up for myself. Finally, if any of you have any personal vendettas against me for some reason, please contact me through e-mail and we can work something out constructively (perhaps a fight to the death). If any of you would like to collaborate on a project, please feel free to contact me personally as well. I hope this contest continues to be as much fun as it has thus far.

7/30/2008 at 5:57 p.m. by jerrycommahello

Since I'm posting, I feel as though I should set a few things straight in regards to comments concerning the video itself:

On the day of filming, one of the cast members backed out at the last second. I filled in on screen for him. Unfortunately, this left nobody to run the camera. I asked one of the other actors (the Dark Figure) to man it. I changed the script so that he was only in one scene and therefore able to at least stand behind the tripod and follow the action. He did his damnedest and by golly it wasn't half bad, if I do say so myself.

So yes, some of the video is a bit dicey. Yes, the Dark Figure could have been more involved. Yes, the chase could have been much more epic. Seriously though, what do you expect from a film with an overall budget of $0 that was written, filmed and edited in one day, under the assumption that there were only a few short hours before the final submission deadline?

In short, winning would be cool, but I'm just in it for the fun and experience.

7/30/2008 at 6:19 p.m. by jerrycommahello

To RockstarProductions:

My post which was directed to you was, for obvious reasons, deleted. I was wondering if you would be down for some good old fashioned smack-talking via e-mail, instead of on this page.

7/30/2008 at 6:39 p.m. by charliechaplin

I feel like I need to leave a comment to mix it up a little.

Watch out for hungrymother last minute entry!!

7/30/2008 at 8:11 p.m. by killerrobotninja

lol, that was fun to read. Hey Rockstar, you're out of control XD.
I think I like this one. lots and lots and lots of running, but the concept is good.

7/30/2008 at 10:15 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Hey KRN. You ganna submit to this one?

7/30/2008 at 10:21 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Oh and Charliechaplin, tell hungry mother to not submit anything. I think his cinematography sucks hard. I dont know why he even came close to winning. Fungusridden was better. But Hungrymother had a nice little twist, but other than that it sucked. Hungrymother's first submit was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid. I was watching it for the first time with a group of friends and most of them aren't even good in cinema, and they all said Hungrymothers subit was horrible. Once again constructive criticisum.

7/30/2008 at 10:25 p.m. by RockstarProductions

@Jerrycommahello

I wouldn't mind on giving you a few pointers on how you could film better. You wana to chat my e-mail is Sk8er101@cox.net

I look forward to our little chat.

7/31/2008 at 8:33 a.m. by defenestrationproductions

@Rockstarproductions, I don't think that is "constructive" criticism. Well the cinematography is, but the last part is just criticism. Which I guess is what this site has come to be about. I find it very awkward that our names and videos keep being brought up, and our chase video. Come on is wasn't that bad, if you take away the ridiculous voice overs (which were meant to make fun of the first videos voice overs) it was shot really well. It took us a long time to get all those random shots of the two guys running to try and make it look appealing by having enough cutaways. We even broke out a wheel chair to try and have a steady following shot. You say cinematography, maybe you do maybe you don't, but it seems like this is the "constructive" criticism people resort to a lot of times, because they can't think of anything, and they think the other people won't know what it means. Now you might know what it means, I am not saying you don't, but if you could elaborate on how you think it is bad cinematography, maybe give examples, I would be happy to take the criticism. The last thing is, do people really think that our video is bad, or are they still bitter because we beat killerrobotninja? Nothing against him, but it seems that he has such devout followers that some of the viewers won't even give the other videos a chance (they also seem to be the commenters). Everyone seemed to like our video until we won, which makes it seem like bitterness not "constructive" criticism. I am not trying to start a battle with you, trust me when I say I don't want that, I just want a little more explanation on why you think that so if it is legitamite, we can work on it.

7/31/2008 at 8:44 a.m. by davidmoon

I'm holding my comments for the next clip when Rockstar premieres his cinematic masterpiece.

I thought this was a good clip.

7/31/2008 at 9:37 a.m. by killerrobotninja

rockstar, all that talk... you better be good ;P

7/31/2008 at 11:31 a.m. by RockstarProductions

@defensetrationproductions

First cinematography is the artistic shots that a director incorporates into the story. The shots can sometimes create deeper meanings and feelings in the scene or film. Like a close up on an actor's face to show maybe the intensity of a scene, depending on the mood of the story/movie. CInematography is also lighting, and the artsy/original way the director creates in the film. This is cinematography.

Yes I do agree I got pissed at Davidmoon and then got out of hands. But look on the bright side. I've attracted many viewers to your film. Because of my argument.

My problem with your movie is that the chase scene was horrible. First, don't use zooms. Especially when your not using a tripod or are following some one running. I rarely use zooms. They are only good for the scary jaws effect. That "duh-DUH!" part of a horror or suspense film. Second, Don't use just one shot for a chase scene. THats what made me disappointed. Make different shots with different angles. Maybe a low shot of the girls foot hitting the ground as she runs and then a close up on the girl looking back to see if the man is following. Things like that and more shots of your own. Trust me I've done chase scenes a million times. Some the "Bourne" way. The Bourne one takes forever by the way. Also not too many of the same shot of the man in black. Make him look more menacing! Like most have asked. And I heard that one of your actors didn't show on the set so the director had to fill in and the actor for the man in black had to film. If you don't have any one else on set who can film well with a camera then consider hiring a new crew. You have experienced Murphy's Law. I have come across that many times and had even had to quit a shoot for the day because my star didn't show. These are the straight forward things I see wrong with your movie. Other than that its ok. But this is just not how I wouldn't film your story. Sorry for any unnecessary mud slinging. So good luck with the votes.

7/31/2008 at 11:47 a.m. by FungusRidden

In all this talk about the director's angles and artistic shots, let's not forget our dear friend the DP ("cinematographer!") The director's busy with the story; it's up to the cinematographer to make the shots "artistic" and whip up some suitable lighting designs. ;)

I would tend to agree with Rockstar about the use of zooms, mostly because too many tourists use them on their home movies and have ultimately spoiled their use to resemble "unprofessionalism." My personal choice is to virtually ALWAYS take a dolly over a zoom, although moving the camera's a lot harder to pull off (especially without autofocus).

But, this point is moot, because I really didn't find your zooming offensive. :P

I'm kinda digging how Rockstar is like the Chance Encounter version of ManBearPig. There's one in every episode... ;)

7/31/2008 at 12:08 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Thank you Fungus.... I think

7/31/2008 at 12:21 p.m. by davidmoon

I don't know why you feel like we were arguing; we pretty much had the same opinion regarding this clip.

The zooms and camera work didn't bother me as much as the action of the villain. They run a mile, and he goes six feet ... there was no intensity or feeling of imminent danger. BUT, I thought it was a good try, and hope that Jerry continues to submit clips to the contest. I also think he's taken the criticism well.

7/31/2008 at 12:26 p.m. by RockstarProductions

@Davidmoon

I argued because this one wasn't realized as not the best. More people seemed to have like this one instead of boom. But now I think "Hazard" is the best in ch. 2. I advise all of you to vote for "Hazard". I think it's better than boom.

7/31/2008 at 12:44 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Actually I take that back. Boom is better because it fits

7/31/2008 at 12:47 p.m. by davidmoon

It was hard to determine the "best" until all of the entries were in. Hazard is intriguing, but doesn't really connect the story well.

7/31/2008 at 1:34 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Ditto

7/31/2008 at 4:31 p.m. by rains_g

This film is not nearly as bad as the boards seem to indicate. It isn't in the same league as "Boom" and "Hazard" but come on, these guys put in the work and at least tried to make a film. Most of the commenters on this site have never even submitted a film...

Hope to see KRN and Defenestration in the rounds to come. I'm out of town and can't hit the next round, but I look forward to getting back in the battle with you guys soon. You too fungusridden, never competed against you in the beta version, but I would love to in this version.

7/31/2008 at 4:35 p.m. by RockstarProductions

@Rains_g

Youll see Rains. I'm going to submit for the third.

7/31/2008 at 4:45 p.m. by davidmoon

Oh please God, fast forward two weeks ...

7/31/2008 at 4:51 p.m. by rains_g

@Rockstar

Looking forward to it. If you're as good as you say you are none of us have a chance.

7/31/2008 at 5:03 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Never said that I was big time Pro but I know more about the dynamics of film and story telling than anyone I have seen here. But KRN is an exception. I think he is just as good. But the rest of you are not as good as me. And David your getting really annoying.

7/31/2008 at 5:17 p.m. by davidmoon

I'm just excited to see what you have to contribute, as with everyone who contributes on Rootclip. Especially since you have boosted about your talent.

I think everyone here has made a great effort. If you are as good as you say, I just might vote for you. I'm no expert, but I have valid opinions just the same.

7/31/2008 at 5:36 p.m. by jerrycommahello

I'm glad my video has raised so much controversy. It's not what I had originally intended, but I'm really starting to enjoy it. To those of you who enjoy it: go ahead and vote for it. To those of you who like others better: go ahead and vote for them. You still have a few days. Take your time and don't let Rockstar pressure you in to anything.

Next time, I will be the one running the camera (hopefully) and everything will look how I would like. I did what I could on my $0 budget.

7/31/2008 at 5:44 p.m. by jerrycommahello

Rockstar. Seriously dude. It was sort of endearing at first, but now you're starting to get on my nerves. All I can say is that your submission for Chapter 3 had better be the best minute-long film I have ever seen. If I am not completely blown away, I am going to take it as a personal offense (as will many others, I'm sure). And please, see if you can do it all by yourself without hiring "a graphics person [you] know," as you are apparently wont to do.

7/31/2008 at 6:19 p.m. by Lerg

Jerrycommahello: Hey man, I'm with you. Nice work, and don't let people like Rockstar cut you down. He thinks he knows everything about filmmaking, well then, I'd like to see his degree. You know what, keep making films the way YOU want them to be, the way you envision them. People like Rockstar think it ups their cool to cut other people down cuz they've got nothing to show for it. And you know what else, his premise is ENTIRELY wrong. First of all, filmmaking isn't fact; it isn't a complex formula like Rockstar says it is. Filmmaking is a medium in which a filmmaker conveys a story to an audience. EXPERIMENT! Do your own thing! Just let Rockstar do his thing, and let's see where he turns up..

Rockstar: Go back to Elementary school, and steal all the lunch money you want. OR learn to grow up. Maybe this is news to you, but you're not the most bad@$# filmmaker ever. 1) what you say about story: Hello! learn to be creative and stop consulting Filmmaking for Dummies! Get it into your head, there's no set formula for a story! Stop hiding behind the fancy words your teacher tells you.

2) Zooms: "I rarely use zooms" --Gee Wiz, if Rockstar doesn't use zooms, it must be illegal..Oh and tripods: "use a tripod". You know what, go ahead and do that in your movie and we'll see how it looks (boring, flat, LIFELESS). I'll admit, I don't use zooms in excess, and I use a tripod for conversations. True. There are some "rules" which are best to stick to. However, zooms add flavor, handheld shooting adds energy! Sure, zooms can be jarring, but that could be intended. I implore you to realize that Filmmaking is art, not algebra.

Again, Rockstar, I respect your opinion. You present good arguments. I have no doubt that you are a good filmmaker, however: learn to break free of that bubble you're living in or you'll never be great. (PS: I'm quite certain there are plenty of people here who are better filmmakers than you, so here's some friendly advice: I'm not trying to get on your case, but I advise you to stop going all defensive. It's not really working). What I'm trying to say is that you keep making movies however you please, and let others do it the way they please. Number 1 rule of filmmaking: Never tell someone how to make their movie.

Later,

7/31/2008 at 10:17 p.m. by davidmoon

I liked the zooms.

@ Lerg Woot

7/31/2008 at 11:23 p.m. by joshutk

@Lerg: Right on. Keep on keepin on Jerry. We're all here to have fun. Well, most of us.

8/1/2008 at 12:34 a.m. by RockstarProductions

@Lerg: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Watever dude. Never said anything against hand held. Only told this director that the chase would have better with a tripod. It was waaaaaaaaaaay tooo shaky. You can tell me I'm the worst film maker ever. Doesn't bother me. I live the way I wana live. And I'm happy with it. Not tryin to diss anyone just saying wat need to be said. Because no one has the guts to say it.

8/1/2008 at 1:26 a.m. by FungusRidden

A good way to help someone improve is to point out what worked really well, so that it can be replicated again and polished up even nicer.

For me, the concept behind this one is perhaps the most stimulating element, other than the black costume. I get really excited by dramatic things like that. >:3

8/1/2008 at 8:17 a.m. by defenestrationproductions

@Rockstarproductions sorry to comment back, I usually avoid commenting because it's really not my kind of thing, but if it intrigues me I guess.

Thanks for the examples they really did make me check my work, but looking at our video again I am wondering if we are talking about the same video. The way you described a chase video should be is the way we did it. I really think you should watch it again. You said don't use zooms. I saw two subtle and slow zoom outs which were done while panning and tilting on a tripod. The shots where we followed them there was no other camera movement besides the following. The rest of the shots were many different random steady and panning shots of them running, such as close ups of their feet like you said. We use to pride ourselves on trying to shoot the same thing multiple times at different random angles and camera movements, but no one else seemed to do it and no one seemed to notice. You are the first person to mention it and you said we didn't do it which throws me off. So all I can think is you might be watching a different video or at some point started talking about this video which I had nothing to do with. Do me a favor, watch Chase again, try not to be biased if you don't like us, you don't have to like the video, but tell me if you really think I did everything you said.

8/1/2008 at 12:52 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Uh look again. I watched it yet again and the whole chase scene has only 3 very long shots of the 3 protagonists. The first very long shot being 12 seconds long with a bunch of unsteady zooms on the three protagonists running. Not trying to bag on you, just trying to help you notice the fualts so that you can correct them. And I know that the actor as the man in black had to film the chase and wasn't as expierienced as your director, sorry thats Murphy's Law. I have had worse things happen to me. My star didn't show up on the set and my crew and I had to wait in a rented clubhouse for three hours until we just decided to film something random for fun. The point is to make your problems work for you. Thats how you can get around Murphy's Law. Maybe you should have had an extra man on set who knows the dynamics of film and could really pull you through? Just one way. You really want to go thru some major pre-production befor any shoot. Saves time, money, and energy. Hope you found this helpfull.

8/1/2008 at 1:28 p.m. by PowerchordProductions

Uh ok I'm goin with you on this one Rockstar. Very good. Your getting a little nicer :D but not there yet haha. Hey Rockstar call me havn't seen you in a while. And expect som competion from me and the others. These people arn't that bad. Murphy's Law has just taken its toll on maybe this one, like you have stated.

8/1/2008 at 6:15 p.m. by FungusRidden

Yeah, having a proper cameraman is really clutch. :< You guys did what you could do and made it work out in the end, but I'm sure it would've been better had your guy pulled through.

If you need to, you could replace him yourself next time and try picking up one spare actor instead. My experience is that bad acting is easier to forgive than bad camerawork.; you may be more needed behind the lens than in front of it. :<

8/1/2008 at 8:53 p.m. by jerrycommahello

Rockstar, you need to read people's posts before commenting. Defenstration is, in fact not a member of my crew. He keeps reminding you that he is talking about "Chase," a Chapter 2 submission from the previous contest. Thank you again for keeping things interesting, however.

8/1/2008 at 10:19 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Oh. Well I'll take a look then

8/1/2008 at 10:39 p.m. by RockstarProductions

I took a look at it and I'd say that your's should have been somthing like that but better. Theirs used a few too many lows, not enough close ups, and I't really didn't impress me. The chase it's self wasn't intense enough. It just didn't seem real. Tony sould have been more worried about the case getting away from him and the other guy should have been more worried about getting caught. It just seemed like it was too set up (even though it is HAHA).

8/2/2008 at 11:39 a.m. by erik

@defenestrationproductions I'm pretty sure that @RockstarProductions was talking about this video (The Man In Black) and not your video (The Chase) from the last story. You'll note that he says "Maybe a low shot of the girls foot hitting the ground as she runs and then a close up on the girl looking back to see if the man is following." You didn't have a girl in your video, so I think that paragraph of his comments were directed at @jerrycommahello.

Oh, and @jerrycommahello, I think you guys did a nice job on this. Filmmaking IS an art and the beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Make it meaningful to you, but also listen to the "constructive" comments and fine tune your filmmaking to your own unique style. That style will evolve over time and I'm excited to see how it changes/grows through this contest. Thanks for being a part of Rootclip! I'm glad you're here!!

8/2/2008 at 3:46 p.m. by RockstarProductions

Yes. I was kinda getting confused on what some people are trying to mention. Yes Jerrycommahello, I was just saying that I could have been something like I mentioned. But I understand that you had struggled with what seems Murphy's Law. Thanx for clearing that up Erik :)

8/4/2008 at 10:58 p.m. by davidmoon

Congrats for swaying one judge. It seems like a good balanced panel of professionals liking a variety of styles.
