Judges' Votes
This piece did a nice job of picking up where the other left off.
The world that was created has this post apocalyptic feel to it that really added to the previous piece...in away it tied it all together. It was also very aesthetically pleasing (considering the obvious camera and lighting limitations) The shot composition, score and acting was all done very well. It also left off with a good cliffhanger that made me want to know more.
Good job.
This clip just edged out Boom for my vote, which I liked because of it's brevity and use of special effects. Hazard got my vote because of the way the clip is told - very cinematic and good use of close-ups. The music is one of the weakest elements, but even so the filmmakers create a sense of foreboding and desolation. I like how the story jumps to the future and creates even more of a mystery as to what happened. I wish the clip had ended earlier - just after KC looks and before we see Ryan tied to that strange farm machinery. I thought I was suddenly in an Amish horror movie. That said, good work overall and strong visual storytelling.

wow guys that was pretty good. the acting was great and the camera work was awesome too. the end was a little wierd but still a great clip!
good job!
Wow. This one was very original. Didn't expect this. I love your cinematography and directing in this film very well done. All though the contrast wasn't as good it's ok. HArd to get good contrast without a very good camera and especially because its on the internet. I also like your cliff hanger. What the hell was he being choked on? Well done guys.
I voted for this one. The rest of you should too. I believe this is a winner. For chapter 2 that is.
I'm for different, but this just doesn't fit.
Nicely executed though.
If you think hard enough it could fit
But yes it might not make sense to the public
I actually might have seconds thoughts on this movie. The fitting part just might spoil it for me. Other than that fantastic movie.
I shouldn't have to think hard. We are only a few minutes into the story.
FUNGUS RIDDEN RETURNS!!
Cinematography is very well done and I love the "soap opera esque" music. 28 days later type of feel. However, I honestly don't know where it's going or why Ryan is on an overturned carriage or whatever that is.
But if there is a vote for cinematography you'll would certainly get it.
i like it! making the audience question what is going on and how things got to the way they were is the whole point of a thriller/suspense style movie! it wouldn't be any fun if the movie flat out told you everything that happened without making you try and figure it out!
I think it needed a few second connecting piece between the bus stop and winding up on the ground. A flash or blackout; something to better connect the action.
I laughed when I heard the "soap opera" music, too, but was surprised that it worked. For all the hemming and hawing I do over original scores, stock music's really not bad...
And yes, I'm pulling a HungryMother / Soulshine this round; FierceDeity, constant comrade, is taking the heat for this one. ;)
But the conection lost my vote. Even though the cinematography is outstanding.
They scalped her? Is this supposed to be a snuff film?
part one ended with the hard blackout... part two begins hard blackout then to... you guys are thinking too hard. You have 4 more chapters to explain what happened. If I wanted it spoonfed to me, I'd just watch TV. Yeah.. WHAT JUST HAPPENED? now I just want to find out .. sometime before the film ENDS.
Great work, guys. As an actor, I'll work with you, anytime!!!
It's a hard blackout because the clip is over. And, how does he know there's a flashlight in the SUV - He takes the bus to work?
Hey guys, loved this entry till the end... I got a little confused. Some things didn't quite fit, but hey... that's the nature of the beast isn't it? Anyway, it was a close call between this one and "Boom" but you've got my vote (for now...I am still contemplating it a little).
Good job though and great cinematography!
he doesn't know there's a flashlight in the car, hence the fact that he's looking around inside with his hands to see if there is anything at all. that's how i see it.
I'd be looking for my Blackberry.
@gwilhelm56
Hey your makin some sense there. I think that might change my mind
good job guys! I like the how eerie it is that the whole city seems empty!
Great job with cinematography, acting, everything. This one would definitely be my favorite if it was for a longer film, but skipping so much with not much time to work with might not be the best idea.
Great job guys, definitely my favorite entry. I'd love to see how everyone follows this one.
You had me until the end...
My favorite part is the zero tension on the rope tied around the guys neck at first glance.
Oh yeah, and I love how everyone is complaining about BOOM "killing" off April. You can still use a character if they've been hit by a car, but I would imagine that would a bit harder if they've been scalped.
The scalp doesn't have the proper wardrobe.
Two things. 1) There were two ropes coming from his neck. One was wrapped around the bottom and was not very tight. The other was wrapped around one of the wheels and it was tight, because when I pulled on it the actor was legitimately getting pulled. Ask FungusRidden yourself, because the rope that was getting pulled was definitely tight. 2) That is not April's scalp. It was never meant to be, nor did we intend anyone to think it was. You never see it get torn from her, nor can you prove anything happened to her beyond she is missing. Just because you believe it is so does not mean it is so.
Besides, it doesn't look like woman's hair. If anything, it looks like a mullet ripped off of Billy Ray Cyrus.
Very interesting. It feels like a cross between a zombie movie, I Am Legend, and a Twilight Zone episode. Great cinematography as well!
The feedback is helpful! Let's listen in on some big issues and throw reflections out:
The hair has no link to April, other than if you want it to have one. K.C. even calls for her after seeing the hair, so if you insist on believing it's hers, then perhaps she's running around bald somewhere. It's anybody's call.
We've got a common trend of loose ropes, but trust me, the one around the neck was tight. Because I almost died trying to yell cut and nearly lost my balance from the tugging on the opposite end. But we should've tied the second rope off better, I'll give you that. ;)
We did skip some major portions, but felt rather entitled to after the last Rootclip proved that keeping time continuous from one chapter to the next was not necessary. Besides, we gave the advantage of a time mark to keep track of chronology. Future chapters could ingeniously utilize the same system to link a full story in a cohesive yet unexpected way.
Thanks for the props on acting, cinematography, etc. :> We set a personal goal to focus a bit more on those elements this time, since we've neglected them a little in the past.
Twilight zoneish....hmm, fitting since Twilight Zone was filmed in the general area of this film :-P Like it a lot guys, kinda made me miss home losers
Hopefully the judges agree with lapses in continuity. It's a much different ball game now. I can't wait to see how it plays out with the popular vote.
there is no lapse in continuity, it's just taking place hours after the original video after something mysterious happened to the three main characters. it'll be up to the people after this video to fill in the blanks if this one were to win. its called a non-linear storyline david, look it up.
My comment was made in response to this statement:
"We did skip some major portions, but felt rather entitled to after the last Rootclip proved that keeping time continuous from one chapter to the next was not necessary."
Relax, it's just my opinion. That doesn't make it right.
Where the hell am I ganna find a huge retro field plower if you win when I go to make the film for ch. 3!! HAHA LOL!!!!
This one's got my vote!! Wonderful cineatography. The contrast could use some work but this is a learning expierience and I'm sure its hard to make good contrast with an inexpensive (meaning 1000 bucks and under) comera. But seriously good job guys. I see why Rockstar is voting for this one. he is very picky. And be happy he likes yours. It's hard to get his vote. Sometimes. HAHA he's a friend of mine. So take it easy one every one Rockstar!!
Oh man ur comin close to the top. KEEP GOIN!!!
Up in first!!! Great Job you guys!!!!

hahahaha. every time i watch your videos i think how weird it is that i know exactly where everything is being shot - and wonder what people who are not from the area think / how they see it. Having said that, i totally cracked up when i saw the above comments!
at any rate though, great job once again. good luck this round, and keep up the good work!
It looks like an urban counrty to me.
Does that even make sense?
Actually, the area this was filmed in IS pretty much urban country--it's in a small town surrounded by farms, and where farming obviously has a big influence.
Hmmm I see
Wat the heck was that blown up thing on the floor in that alley that KC walks past. Was it like a blown up leaf blower or something?
are you talking about the close up shot? if so, that's a gas mask.
Oh. Looks like a blown up leaf blower. HAHA LOL!!!
Honestly, I prefer final frame-to-starting frame continuity between Rootclips (i.e. what the other entries have). We did want to split the characters and drop them into a predicament more hastily, however, without spoiling the surprise of what was causing the chaos. I think both Jaytaylor and KRN proved in their winning entries that sometimes twisting the timeline is worthwhile.
To me, as a director, this was one of those times.
And just a quick note about that controversial April's Scalp conspiracy, which is disturbing many people here.
Despite the rumors going around, the scalp was NOT meant to belong to April. Therefore why KC spends the entire clip searching for her and Ryan ("Ryan! ...April!")
This situation is much like the one placed around George Lucas by certain art institutions, which claimed the infamous "Death Star trench" scene from A New Hope represented the vaginal cavity and Luke's journey to maturity as a man. When told this, Lucas swore adamantly the scene had NOTHING to do with such a concept.
And then it was instead determined that he had "subconsciously" crafted the scene to resemble intercourse, without even realizing it.
You may determine for yourselves what we subconsciously meant to say, but this is the truth: I searched for disturbing things to include in the film, and remembered that a friend had recently referred to that wig as "roadkill-hair." And so I grabbed it, and we put it in the movie.
Artistically, however, you are completely free to continue the story under the context that the scalp WAS April, given that KC still for whatever reason went looking for her. That's a relatively minor lapse and easily passable in the overall story.
Forgive me for double-posting, but I felt it was time to give official word to prevent at least some of the confusion around this issue.
Thank you Fungus. I think I know wat I could write for this one if it wins.
Haha, all the commenters want to imagine april dead. In boom, they all said the car crash killed her, and in this everyone said its her head... interesting...
The Death Star was a vagina? I knew it!
@Jakus HAHA thats kinda Ironic.
Uh Powerchord. THis is a bit Awkward. David. Crude humor isn't needed Im glad this video is winning the chapter. So far. Ill see to it that I write a good script after this submission.
2 1/2 days to go ... it's anyone's game.
Dont count on it Rockstar
Just like last time hugh Powerchord. I guess we'll see who's skills are best my old friend. TO CH. 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
HAHA! TO CH. 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If anyone wants to know. Me and "Rockstar" are friends. Sort of. We both are into guitar and film. Odd quincedence but true. And we havn't really talked much. We kinda went our seperate ways in film.
Ugh. I was just better than you'd hoped and you wanted to the director for every film so I left you to do some of my own work.
Nonononononono. YOU were very bossy about every film we tried to make so thats why I wanted to be the director of every film we did. So you couldn't boss any one around. Thats why YOU left.
Ugh I dont have time for a history lesson from you. I have two scripts I must get back to.
Ugh watever dude. Go screw up another movie "Rockstar" XP
Did you guys/gals date perchance?
hahaha. not funny David. No just an unsteady friendship.
I especially love the part where he hits the flashlight before he tries to turn it on.
Yeah, he actually tried it first, but wasn't facing the camera for it. :< Little things that ruin life. There's one (or nine) in every video.
These are my issues with this video ...
I think I've mentioned the transition into the first clip into this one not connecting harmoniously. By the look of the group's face at the end of the first clip, I would think some reaction is necessary, if there was a sudden blackout. Like a "What the heck was that ...?" under KC's breath. Then the disorientation, and a reaction to the "unidentified" scalp.
KC is on his Blackberry (texting) and not paying attention to Ryan's and April's conversation. How did he know April's name? It's doubtful he knew her before because he didn't acknowlege her. She seemed new to the stop, while Ryan and KC were regulars.
Being a Blackberry user myself, if I found myself blacked out and disoriented with my Blackberry in hand, my first reaction would be to find it and give my friend Ryan, or anyone a call.
The flashlight scene seemed like a pointless mission. There was ample outside lighting shown in every scene. It worked in the least scene, but he could have picked it up along the way instead (a dropped flashlight).
Once KC passes the gas mask, the next shot does not show the fire. debris and body parts behind him. KC suddenly goes from a street to a side walk. It might have been better if he rounded a corner on to a sidewalk for clean continuity.
Hey, those are valid. Especially one and two, although there are several explanations as to why KC doesn't go back to using his Blackberry. Maybe it got destroyed, lost, looted, or stolen by - it - for sinister purposes... Your call.
Let's call the flashlight scene "investigation," rather than "I need a flashlight." But if I were lost in the city in the middle of the night, having a spare light wouldn't be unhelpful, either. But the primary point of that scene is KC trying to figure SOMETHING out, or find SOMETHING useful. Play any video games? They have certain influence. But your suggestion of finding it on the ground somewhere is good, too, and maybe would've offered a better shot without taking as much time.
The fact that whatever it is can trash and burn one street, then leave a sidewalk virtually untouched (short of someone wired into a death machine) says some very unusual and perhaps disturbing things about whatever the opposing force might be. At best, it's selective; at worst, it's bipolar and has multiple personalities. :P
Thanks for the feedback and considerations, everyone! They're helpful in seeing where people are looking and what elements need to be changed for future submissions to better keep the audience involved. :>
Even though I'd dogged this clip a little, I do like it. I think it has good pace, style and is well-acted There is a sense of growing danger and suspense from the very beginning.
I have a question about judging ... and maybe I'm too lazy to read the blogs. Will the judges comment on each clip, or selected clips along with their voting? Or will only a decision be posted, and a winner determined?
I think it would be beneficial to here their comments, in opposition to opinions form unqualified hacks like myself.
I've read the blogs, and I don't remember it making any mention of them commenting or giving feedback, just judging and scoring. :<
Thats a little scary
Judges will be giving reasons for their decisions. I'm looking forward to seeing what they think.
Well said my friend.
That's great news, Allen.
Woah - a tied user vote. So it comes down to the last two judges?
Dude by one percent!!!!
rootclip should adjust the height of the judge comment boxes so we can read everything they said.
If you drag the cursor down and copy what's highlighted, you can paste it and get the full scoop.
We still have one judge to go? This is right down to the line.
haha, nevermind. like, right after i posted that the boxes got extended
When are they going to show the last judge!!!! I need to know who wins!!!
they already showed the last judge. he voted for "The Man in Black."
I think this was maybe a little too dark for me. The whole bloody hair thing turned me away from it.
