Chapter 2 - "Erratic Chronos"

What if time wasn't as linear as we are led to believe? What if life was our raw footage and we, as editors, had the ability - the power - to go back and forth, add, remove and change... life itself.

Dude you need some of your own footage.

7/31/2008 at 12:07 p.m. by ThatsWhatSheSaid

Not sure how this advances the story at all. Seems like there were about a dozen different cool possibilities here, but in the end this is just a total rehash.

7/31/2008 at 12:32 p.m. by FungusRidden

Props to your editing wizardry! Very interesting work with the footage!

But, I agree; incorporating new footage would have done a lot more for the story, although maybe it just wasn't an option for you this time. Hop in with a camera next round and you'll be able to really show off your style!

7/31/2008 at 12:58 p.m. by davidmoon

What if this one wins ... everyone can submit this round again.

7/31/2008 at 2:35 p.m. by Lawnz

RockstarProductions- Technically, no, and there is some "added" stuff.

ThatsWhatSheSaid- It is a total rehash... that's the point. For what I have planned, this works. If I don't win, obviously I will have to change what I'm planning.

FungusRidden- Thanks, I appreciate that. There will be video footage in the future. I didn't film anything this time on purpose. I wanted to start redirecting the viewer... instead of focusing on the characters; focus on what's around them.

davidmoon- haha, technically, I guess you could, huh? I think I've provided another road for people to go down though.

7/31/2008 at 3:46 p.m. by Lawnz

Whoops!

Apparently there is some concern over my submission and the development of the story... this my be a result of me not being fully aware of the rules, and technically I have no one to blame but myself. This is what I wasn't aware of:

First Prize winners from one of the first four voting periods of this contest are not eligible to be selected again as First Prize winners for any of the other first four voting periods in the same contest.

In planning out my idea, I broke it up into 5 chunks assuming I would submit for each chapter and, best case scenario, if I were to win, I would be able to continue my story fully (if that makes sense) But instead I look like a fool who submitted a video that could have gone further down the path of development.

I think perhaps it needs to be stated a little more clearly and prominently that once you win a round, you can't submit again until the Final Chapter. Or... maybe people (me in this case) should read the rules more thoroughly? haha I'll make up for it next round. =)

7/31/2008 at 4:06 p.m. by davidmoon

At least this one didn't kill April in the first minute. Poor April.

7/31/2008 at 4:30 p.m. by Lawnz

LOL... this is true. Getting waxed by a car is a little harsh. Although, in "Hazard" we don't even know what the heck happened to her... all we see is her hair/scalp! hahaha

7/31/2008 at 4:36 p.m. by rains_g

Looks good, great editing...but I can't vote for someone editing anothers work (especially when it is the clip they are supposed to building on).

Isn't this kind of plagiaristic too, no original content...just effects and editing. You definitely have talent though so I hope you submit in the next round. Just film it yourself.

7/31/2008 at 4:46 p.m. by ing

not sure why you'd assume that was April's scalp....i didn't make that assumption.

7/31/2008 at 5:13 p.m. by SDawg

I like this clip, just not sure it advances the story.

7/31/2008 at 5:20 p.m. by davidmoon

I think it's actually the most creative, and probably seemed like a good idea at the time. I hope to see more from you in clips to come.

7/31/2008 at 5:22 p.m. by Lawnz

rains_g- Then don't vote for my clip. That's the power you have.

ing- Well, possibly her scalp. Your right, it could be anybody's scalp. My assumption was based on how she has light brown hair, there's the same hair color laying on the ground, she's not around, and the other dude is tied up in what appears to be a death-trap of sorts. One could assume that it was her's.

7/31/2008 at 5:23 p.m. by Lawnz

davidmoon - Thanks. I'll definitely will be submitting again.

7/31/2008 at 5:30 p.m. by davidmoon

Hey!!! That scalp wasn't wearing a white shirt or black skirt ...

7/31/2008 at 5:54 p.m. by ing

nor is there proof is was ever attached to April. in the world of movies, you can't prove someone is dead unless you see them die right on screen, and even then sometimes that means nothing. a bloody scalp proves nothing, in my opinion. it could belong to anyone who was involved in the "incident" or whatever.

7/31/2008 at 6:02 p.m. by Lawnz

ing- Yea yea yea... hahaah ;)

7/31/2008 at 6:14 p.m. by davidmoon

Aren't you suppose to carry the story and characters forward?

7/31/2008 at 6:37 p.m. by Lawnz

Or backward? Or side to side? Not too much now... we don't wanna make them sick.

7/31/2008 at 6:52 p.m. by fiercedeityys

sometimes you can carry the story forward by carrying it backward. ever seen "Memento," david?

7/31/2008 at 7:25 p.m. by jerrycommahello

I really liked the editing job and special effects in your film, but I would have really liked to see some original content.

As for those of you who think the story needs to "move along," it sort of does. It just doesn't do it in the traditional sense. I would have to say about this movie the same thing I said about Hazard: it would work much better for a longer film. Overall great job; I look forward to seeing your next submission.

7/31/2008 at 10:02 p.m. by davidmoon

Actually, I meant in Hazard. There's an argument that the wig with ketchup isn't April. I though you need to carry all of the characters forward from the previous clip?

7/31/2008 at 10:28 p.m. by ing

from what I've gathered from the rootclip people, you just need to carry the story forward with the same characters. no mention in the rules or anything that all three of them have to be in the video at all times.

7/31/2008 at 11 p.m. by davidmoon

I stand corrected. Does that mean if Hazard wins, the unidentified ketchup covered mullet has to follow?

7/31/2008 at 11:10 p.m. by ing

it was in one scene, man. is there some sort of reason why you seem to be targeting that group?

7/31/2008 at 11:13 p.m. by SomethingsAwry

Hey davidmoon, you should probably stop while you're ahead and start posting your spam in the relevant movie comment section

I'm pretty sure erratic chronos doesn't want to hear you go on and on about your personal crusade so ehhhh

8/1/2008 at 1:39 a.m. by FungusRidden

EC, I wasn't aware of that rule, either. I wonder if it was there in the past Rootclips...? Thanks for pointing it out!

This really isn't the place for discussion about the other entries, those with scalps and without. But David's been around the block enough times not only to know that, but to also know the answers to all his own questions just by considering the contents of past Rootclip entries.

You're just as big a fire-starter as Rockstar, aren't you, Moon? ;) Albeit, far more subtle.

8/1/2008 at 7:32 a.m. by davidmoon

I think it was Lawnz who mentioned the scalp on this board. I have no personal crusade; but to say that it's clearly implied that the scalp belongs to April. I think it's pretty clear - but that's just my opinion.

My apologies to Lawnz. I will keep to the subject of your clip from now on.

8/1/2008 at 7:47 a.m. by Lawnz

No worries. =) Just glad to see people are passionate about the videos and the whole Rootclip project as a whole.

8/1/2008 at 11:46 a.m. by rains_g

@Lawnz - Hey man, didn't mean to come off like a jerk (i kind of did after re-reading my post) I apologize for that. You definitely have some great talent and I expect that you will enter again with something really good. Didn't mean to make my comment sound like a bashfest. I'll learn to be more political next time.

8/1/2008 at 11:46 a.m. by ing

how can you say its clearly implied that it belongs to April when the group that worked on it said they weren't trying to imply that at all? simply put, its only April if you have some ardent belief that it IS her. otherwise, it could be anyone at all. besides, KC still yells out for April after seeing it, and he doesn't seem like a dumb guy who would be trying to find someone missing her scalp, so apparently he knew it wasn't her.

8/1/2008 at 12:27 p.m. by davidmoon

Could be disbelief? I doubt he is a forensic scalp analyst and could make immediate identification.

It's implied, and I actually think the scalp was a good device in creating a feeling of immediate danger. If the clip wins, the next winner will determine if the remains belong to April, or Billy Ray Cyrus, or a rare blond African angora raccoon that cheap wigs are often made out of. But, to the audience, it's safe to assume that the scalp in question belongs to April as a gut first reaction. And, I think it was intentional.

If you would like, I'll buy into the notion that the alleged scalp was left for future plot discovery. I'd rather hear that explanation from the authors than an outright, no ... it's not her! Time will only tell.

8/1/2008 at 1:09 p.m. by fiercedeityys

As one of the two people who made the film, there is no specific explanation for who the scalp belongs to. We figured it would be a decent gross out, and we were going for weird/strange things that would be laying around the city, such as the gas mask in the later shot, along with a hand that can be seen during the fire scene. There was no intention for it to be April, nor intend to imply it. It was basically just a great shot to start off with in order to A) freak out our character, and B) set the mood for what the city is like now. If we happen to win, it'll be up to the next group to decide if it was April or not, but we never intended for it to be, hence the reason KC still calls out for April.

HEY DAVID MOON YOU SEEM LOST, PLEASE CLICK ON THIS LINK AND KEEP ON KEEPING ON http://rootclip.com/stories/chance-encounter/2/hazard/

Last time I checked, there was no "ketchup splattered scalp" in Erratic Chronos so...

8/1/2008 at 3:53 p.m. by Lawnz

LOL

8/1/2008 at 3:54 p.m. by davidmoon

If it did, it would be tied for first; neck and neck ... or should I say, scalp to scalp?

8/1/2008 at 4 p.m. by davidmoon

Lawnz, I certainly hope that you enter again, so I have the opportunity to discuss other clips in your comments. It's been fun, and you've been a gracious host.

8/1/2008 at 6:25 p.m. by FungusRidden

Sorry for veering the discussion off topic from your film, Lawnz. :< Everybody gets a little charged up about interpreting film, I guess. We'll try to focus that onto yours next and heatedly squabble about your intentions. >:3

8/1/2008 at 10:05 p.m. by davidmoon

Seen Lawnz ... now it's boring in here. :) I can hear crickets from my monitor ...

8/3/2008 at 7:24 p.m. by tugeagon

In my opinion this clip advances the story further than any other. Additionally, it's the only one that gave me chills. Yes, its just using the old footage, but it is really and original idea, its unconventional that's what I like about it.

8/3/2008 at 10:22 p.m. by PowerchordProductions

Mmmm I could go along with this one. It seems like you want to emphasize the notebook and possibly the relationship between Ryan and April. Ill vote for you to see what could potentially happen.

8/4/2008 at 10:21 a.m. by killerrobotninja

great voiceover, great soundtrack, great editing. I have a feeling you're going to kill it next round.

8/4/2008 at 10:46 a.m. by Lawnz

Thanks to all for the comments, suggestions and crits. Looks like this voting period is about to by closed, so, I'll see you all next round. =)

8/4/2008 at 2:23 p.m. by charliechaplin

Why don't we break the "scalp" down.

KC, who just partially met April through Ryan (maybe), wakes up to find a bloody patch of hair on the ground next to him. So naturally I would want to know what happened to my friend and his scalp-less new lady friend.

It's natural for the audience to make that association being that the last thing they saw was all three of them together. When he wakes up and there's bloody hair similar to that of the girl's in the first video.

But I don't know what your really trying to defend. So what? I think it's cool to have her scalped. Sets up perfectly for her to be a zombie or infected...

@Lawnz- I also have a feeling your next video will be really good. I'm interested to see what you turn out.

8/4/2008 at 6:52 p.m. by FungusRidden

:<

We were, uh, trying to defend our vision, CC. But yours is cool, too.

Anyway, we're all back to the drawing board for Round 3. See you there, Lawnz?

8/5/2008 at 11:01 a.m. by Lawnz

Better believe it! haah
