What is Working, What is Not?

Hey guys, use this thread to tell us what is working and what isn't at Rootclip.

Erik and I have a lot of plates spinning and are working on a couple more additions to the site as we speak. I can't stress enough that this site is all about the community, so if the community has opinions, I need to hear them. We are absolutely open to making Rootclip the best collaborative short film website in the world.

So, let us know what you like and dislike. Thanks!

Like: Watching/discussing entries, checking the forums

Dislike: That only about three of us seem to. T_T

Hey, a newbie with a few thoughts here!

Most things works just fine around here, but there are a couple of things I've noticed.. mostly nitpicking!

First, I'm not sure if I like that when I click on a chapter during the voting period, it starts by showing the video that has the most % of the votes. It seems fair to me that a random video should be shown - or something else? To avoid skewing the results toward to most-liked chapter :)

Second, I can't seem to rewind to the very beginning of a video after I've started playing it. Not a big thing, but annoying. Using Safari on OS X 10.4.

Third, it would be cool if it was possible to see a finished story as one movie, as opposed to clicking on chapter 2, 3, 4 etc.

Fourth, I would've loved it if the default aspect ratio was 16:9. There's been years since any kind of movies was produced in 4:3 :)

That's all I can think of now. You've done an awesome job on this site, and it's really inspiring to see all of the chapters people are making. I hope to be making a submission for chapter 3 of Hole and Corner :)

Those are all good ideas, I would echo the same (except safari)

All sounds about right. The ability to edit your posts might be nice too.

Oh, and better video quality would be really cool too!

The 16:9 may be hard to get submitters to universally adhere to; I know when I first started here, there was a long and specific list of compression requirements, and we STILL couldn't seem to make the video run properly once it was uploaded... :<

The Rootclip guys ultimately had to relink the audio from one of our failed upload attempts to the video of another.

I like 16:9 infinitely more than 4:3, but it may be too much to expect from submitters, particularly new ones more creative than technically savvy.

The rest of those are A+, though, especially changing the link to the top-voted entry during voting periods.

What about allowing for multiple aspect ratios? Vimeo allows for all sorts of aspect ratios. That way those of use who feel like using 4:3 can still do so, and those of us who like our 16:9 can also do so. Just a thought.

or jut widening the current player so if they want to go 4:3 there are bars on the sides instead of the top and bottom.

The only downside to doing it that way is if the video is encoded wrong, it'll show up with black bars on the top and the sides. Most 16:9 YouTube videos appear that way. But it is a good idea.
