User Rankings

I don't know how your system works, but I think it would be cool to have different user rankings such as "Beginner, moderate, expert" etc etc based on your number of comments/posts and number of votes. The higher your ranking, the more your votes worth. This would help with people commenting and voting more, and would make it so the regular's votes mean more than troll votes.

You could even have a little film fun with it and make the base level be like "Production Assistant" and then "Boom Man" then "Camera Grip" and on to "Editor", "Director of Photography" and finally "Director" would be the highest level. I think it would be a good way to keep people coming back to the site and stay active, and it would be a nice perk for regulars.

But I don't know if theres any way to incorporate that into your current system.

I could see something like that implemented into the forum side of things, but I wouldn't want it to effect the voting. The loudest voice isn't necessarily the right one, know what I mean?

Hmm... that is true. But you'll find a lot of the "loud voices" don't hang around the site for a long time. I'm thinking of people like Davidmoon who has practically thousands of comments, knows what hes talking about, and offers really good reviews, yet his vote counts as much as my grandma's... But you do make a good point.

Judging film, or any aesthetic value, comes down so much to personal taste/preference that to say one knows what they are talking about is always quite subjective (not trying to know davidmoon). I like the idea of a set panel (judges) that all can agree on going into it who's vote will carry more weight. Really beyond that, 'judging' ones work as superior or inferior is all in one's head. Remember, nothing's real, JakusB.

Hmm... are the judge's votes any more non-subjective than davidmoons? I'm just saying, it would be nice if there were some perks to being a regular. Most other online video competition sites have varying degrees of voting, usually where more experienced members had a higher voting ability.

Problem with something like that is you run the risk of alienating new users, who may not feel that they can compete equally when there is already an established "upper-class" of people who can support a video with more strength, while they have to rally support from people who are also new? Know what I mean?

Ahh that is true I guess. Ideally it wouldn't matter if you were new or not; the regulars would just vote for the video they felt was best...

No more subjective, but the line is drawn, and everyone going into it knows it. I would agree with fiercedeityys, it would run the risk of alienating newer members. The regulars get the satisfaction of constant and utter enjoyment of the site, newcomers....they'll learn eventually
