Everybody's been bouncing this idea around for a long time, but nobody's actually made an official suggestion. So I'm doing my official duty and being the fuse to this long-awaited bomb.
Who has interest in using Rootclip as the launch point for a collaborative feature-length film?
There's a lot of talent here and a number of ambitious teams waiting in the wings for the next story to start. It's my personal feeling that not only CAN we pull off something this big, but that we can generate a lot of interest and acclaim should we choose to apply ourselves to such an ambitious and lofty project.
Obviously, there's a downside: working with ever-changing locations and actors, and even video quality, could make for a very tricky film to follow. It'd take some meticulous planning and storytelling to organize a movie that can make so many frequent jumps and still be both entertaining and accessible.
Some considerations I've had are to shoot a Cloverfield-style movie, where different teams represent different camera operators in different locations, either taping different perspectives of the same situation, or taping related-but-different events entirely. This would avoid needing identical settings and actors.
Another idea would be to shoot a movie in the style of Sin City: each team contributes a story that's set in the same world with the same flavor, but features a different character and different events. Locations could likely be fudged, given they remain generic ("urban environment"), and the stories could still interlink through verbal or visual reference -- and goodness knows we've gotten pretty good at that, given the number of crafty Jim-inserts and revisions we've managed in the past.
A third idea: Heath Ledger's final film was shot in such a way that his role was played by several actors, depending on the scene. Perhaps we could use a similar concept and construct a movie where different scenes are set in different worlds or dimensions, and therefore the characters change depending on the point in the movie.
Regardless of how it happens, I believe it'll get noticed if it happens. Rootclip's had a presence at multiple festivals already; how many more should it earn access to if it's responsible for a groundbreaking feature shot all over the country (or WORLD)?
Toss in your ideas and thoughts; I'd love to hear who's interested in maybe getting involved with this. I am fully sold that if we manage to make this, it won't go unnoticed.

I Think this is a great idea. but i think the hardest part will be coming up with the story line to work with different crews from differenet parts of the country. and are we talking like full-length 90 minute movie here or like a 30-45 minute short? i like the sound of a full-length movie but that will make it only that much more difficult. still i think this sounds AMAZING and should it come to fruition i will participate.
I think feature-length (70-90 minutes) is the only way to go, if we want serious and wide-spread recognition. You're right, it'll be a lot harder, but if we can get seven teams involved, we'd be shooting ten-minute scenes -- which would be more than manageable, so long as we've all got our stories straight.
Glad to hear your support for it, though! Storage space could be an issue, but I'm sure we can find a way to cross that bridge when we come to it.
AJ, I love it. This does need to happen. Let me think this over more and give my thoughts.
mmm mmm good
I like the original concept of Rootclip. However, I think there needs to be a way to push off beginning clips and a faster-paced clip schedule.
We also talked briefly about introducing more mini-challenges, such as one-shot videos and no-actor videos. The idea with these was that they weren't necessarily for prizes, but for scores that improved your site ranking (so, competition). We even fantasized about a point system, where downloadables (like royalty-free music or tutorials) could be used with score points from such videos.
Sadly, I think we're focused most immediately on trying to find a new sponsor and/or new web space. Things are looking pretty bleak for improving the site until we can address these other matters. :<
In your search for sponsorship, what about trying to tie it in with a product or company that does something similar, in the vein of being consumer controlled. For example Burger King and 'have it your way' What other services are there that could benefit from tying in, even if for one round. They could promote it on their end as a sponsored film competition. To get an idea of what I mean, think Burger King 'have it your way' film, etc. lame example, I know, but it illustrates what I'm trying to explain
Any news on the future of RootClip?

Honestly... probably indefinite suspension, unless someone knows something I don't.
I dare to ask ... and don't want to beat a dead horse, but what are the current obstacles?
